LGB 2096 Soundcard

oo 80's, WW1, Rupert Bear, beer
Having been talked out of catenary in the garden by sensible Mrs B (a trip wire for Westies in her mind) I have treated myself to another wizzy but with factory sound. I bought it knowing the card wasn't working but having taken it apart did wonder:
Is there an easy way to test or repair, or
Is the sound so crap it isn't worth the effort?
All the ic's etc make it look interesting, there is a little steel button underneath - horn? I'm not heart broken if there isn't a solution but keen to find out what I can do cheaply and what I'll get at the end of it.
Any tips appreciated.

Is this fitted with the early factory sound unit? If so it will be the same as our Bo-Bo which we very rarely use the sound on. I guess it's down to personal preference whether you like it or not but it is certainly nothing compared to modern diesel soundcards, and after a short period of time it can become too much.

Thanks Matt. No idea if this is original but the tidy wiring suggests it is. This is a picture of my insides - there seemed a lot of circuitry for a crap sound but I'm no electronics expert:o:

That's a pretty old one! Not worth fixing I'd have thought, if you want sound then much better to chip it up with a modern one.

Yes thats the same soundboard as mine, identical loco too actually! These older loco's seemed to have massive circuitboards compared to todays locos.

Thanks Jon/Matt - I only paid £200 so not too worried if it works or not. If it is as high quality as the chuffing Stainz I don't think I'll chuffing bother! May get dad to have a quick look as he is in to electronics, not sure I'm into sound anyway but curious.
Thanks again. Derek

The sound on these was akin to chirping crickets in the garden, only worse. Given that chirping crickets are annoying enough, I think you could guess the quality of these older sound boards.

Before i bought mine a couple of years back someone filmed me a sound clip of the actual sound...Can't seem to find anything like it now but if the suns out tommorow i'll do a little recording to show you what your missing out on :rolf:

Mark,
no doubt your link is to the latest Massoth sound demo for a decoder. At first reading, I believed that you were stating that this was the original sound for the #2096S. I know mine just had the chirping cricket sound with no startup, station announcement, etc. As voltage increased more and more crickets started to chirp.

Tim, it is the latest sound as would be loaded into an eMotion XLS or S decoder, sorry for the confusion.

Different sound card to my 2095?

You could make a note of the position of each of the 5 potentiometers and turn these to either end as these might be the volume controls. If this doesn't work, then reset to original noted positions. I'd start with the biggest one on the top left.

Might be worth making sure that the loud speaker still works! If you have another spare speaker try it!

Or use an old earpiece or headset to test.

I was going to ask what the black box with the 2 red dots on the top right corner does. Is it a battery box perhaps?

Double check the wiring and ensure that there are no loose connections.

These are the simple things I would always try first, before any fault diagnosis....

The black box is indeed a battery box Gizzy. These older loco's were fitted with a battery so that when you turned the track power off, the loco's sound still ticks over for 20 seconds.

I'd just filmed a clip which shows this in action, as well as the running sound and the horn, but my computer is playing up and not playing any sound :wits:

A back-up battery for the sound is what I thought it might be Matt. my 2095 uses a capacitor instead. Might be worth Derek (Bazzer) checking and replacing the battery.

Also noticed Peter's (Whatlep) thread on converting Ian's (Cogges) similar 2096 loco just now?

http://www.gscalecentral.net/m160892

There was an identical sound card which was working, but removed for the conversion, so Derek might be able to get hold of a replacement if his is definitely unserviceable....

its fine to tinker with the card to see if you can make it work
having tried myself with another old sound card-good luck -its really hard to find out whichcomponent is defective, which solder joint is cracked etc

you can test the speaker -hit it with a 9v to the leads and if it makes any noise -its ok

imho, versus the nice new digital vesions
the sound is noticeably synthetic, and as noted , a bit irritating-doesnt really sound like an engine idle but more like a radio interference that rises with increased track voltage-

so if you go to you tube and find a 2096s youll be able to hear what they sound like

Three cheers for Mr Gizzy (I think) a quick test by my daddy with his multimeter and a test run with a spare speaker proved ithe original to be duff. A 6 pound ebay bargain (exact match) and I now have a farting, cricketing, Westie enraging 2096 to call my very own
If the dogs react outside as they did inside it, or they:thumbup:, may have to be removed.
Thanks again Mr Gizzy - does that make you a four star Numpty or a six? Not sure how the star rating works ona numpty level.

Good to hear you've sorted it Bazzer!

Maybe I'm not such a Numpty after all.... :rolf:
