LGB 5003 Transformer Issues

Hello, new to the forum but not to LGB or G-Scale trains (our original starter set is now 25 years old and still running strong!). I recently bought a LGB blue Christmas Train with the starter transformer. We are only running the Stainz engine on about 40ft. or so of track. After about 15 minutes or so of running the train stops for a few minutes and then starts back up. The only thing I can think of is that the transformer is getting to warm and shutting down for a few minutes. We have three other starter sets that have these transformers (which they are just used for sidings now) but I do not remember having this issue before (it could very well have happened and I just don't remember LOL). Is this normal or is the transformer going? The engine runs fine on our layout at my parents so I know it is not the locomotive. Thanks for any help in advance.

It's not unknown for these controllers to develop problems after a while.
How easy is it to swap the suspect transformer for one of those normally used for the sidings?

Not hard. I had thought about that as well. It has been a little worse lately. Just have to got grab one. Was thinking of getting a later one that had a little more power for now. We have a Bridgeworks unit and an older MRC 6200 for the layout byt I cannot justify the cost of a Bridgeworks for our setup until we have bigger locos and head outdoors.

Where are you based? Anywhere near Cambs/Beds/Herts/London? If so have a small LGB Controller that could be a test replacement for you. PM me if you are accessible by Train easily in this area.

The Stainz isn't chipped for digital is it. There were a few Massoth L chips that used to demand high current and then cut out a few years ago.

I only know of 2 Blue Stainz xmas locos, both should be early cabs with raised lettering with a no2.
1 has a early d type chassis block with metal rods, one has a split chassis with metal rods.
Neither had chips, although the one with the d type block had a smoke stack
