I have the train and added the lights and extra motor. It's been stored away for almost ten years now. It's an easy job to do, I just don't recall the details at the moment. I also converted it to take power from overhead catenary. If and when I ever build a layout with a catenary system, it will see some action.
I fitted my own red and white LEDs when I added a DCC decoder to mine. Still only a single motor in my set, I added wires and plugs in each coach to carry the lighting connections through to the unpowered end.
I have added the kit to a set, as well as DCC.. If just adding lights, and/or extra motor (recommended if you have the other two cars) it is a very easy fit..
DCC, and wiring through the cars is a little more awkward, but still fairly easy.
That looks a good job. I have one of the earlier DB liveried sets that I bought from a chum. He had fitted the extra motor, as it runs as five car set and had wired it through to the front using plugs and sockets. There is loads of room inside to do this!
It was designed to only pick up from the front motor bogie though, the second only provides traction so that it can work on our analogue automatic block system.
I have added extra pick ups to second bogie on the power car, but we were always disappointed by the dimness of the lights. I thought about diodes and I think you have answer. I may copy that one day!
As an easier/quick solution I simply fitted lower voltage bulbs salvaged from Playmobil track powered trains - These give a decent light at the speed the thing normally travels at.
Thanks for replying guys ......
Sadly my new mk3 ICE Train is a none runner straight from the box.
Dragon G-scale have been amazing I must say but now can't see it running for about a week.
Is it better for me to fit my own led lights than the supplied ones with the upgrade ?
Is it better for me to fit my own led lights than the supplied ones with the upgrade ?
That depends on two things. First, what is the cost of the upgrade kit when compared to making one yourself ? Second, do you feel like doing it yourself ?
I believe the lights come with the motor as a kit. But it's been so many years since I purchased the upgrade kit, I cannot be absolutely certain of that.
