I’ll be honest: This question accounts for about ninety percent of the reasons I made this forum account(the other ten percent being a genuine desire to connect with my fellow hobbyists) Im currently looking for an LGB Santa Fe Mikado Pilot/cow catcher piece. I’ve exhausted all the regular sources (Trainli, German EBay, MTSline, etc) and was wondering if anyone here had any advice(or better yet, one to sell me).

Thanks,
-Noah

Know anyone with a 3D printer who could make you one?

If I had the CAD models, probably. An original part, even if used, would be preferable, for the sake of durability.

Actually, if you CAN get a CAD file, Lukas has access to a 3D printer in his school lab. He’s been itching to print something for me.

In France, no chance to find this part!
I had just some photos or drawings of number of pilot (helper, yard donkey or road engine) so I decided to scratchbuild one with 2 Mm brass tubes and 1,2 Mm blind bolts and nuts.
I have not been skill enough to make the good number of tubes, but i am quite satisfied by the result.

Sir, you have inspired me to do the same for my moguls sans pilots. Thank you!

You did a great job on that pilot.

I would also like to mention that Trackside Details makes a brass casting of a cowcatcher that is rather nice.

I have a CAD drawing of a rough cow catcher I made and I am happy to let people hack it up. It is Tinkercad just can't figure out how to pass it on.

I have uploaded it to thingiverse but it will not be available for 24 hours.

That is certainly a lovely job, I wonder why with the skill you have shown in fabricating thus far why you feel unable to do some more poles/pipes. Just a couple more each side would I am sure finish the job to your personal satisfaction.

A pilot is made of 5 bars on each side of the coupler and I made a mistake in the drawing of the pilot, so I had no room enough for the number 4 & 5.
And when you succeed to make three, your hand begins to shiver ...
For John: more informations in the January/February (page 61 -62) & November/December (page 60-61) Narrow Gauge Gazette 1978 and an issue (June 1973) of Model Railroader.

Good morning, I have a 440 Bachmann Eureka and Palisade on my bench: the distance between the track and the pilot is 6 Mm. 0,23622 of an inch.
Be aware that a brass pilot WILL make shorts if your track is not really leveled!
