Steve,
I assume you are referring to the letters on the silver/blue mogul being 'stretched out' and closer to the vertical rivet line at each end. I have a couple of 2028D moguls but never compared the roadname letter spacing previously. I do prefer the blue version. Strangely, LGB released the red/green version because supposedly research had shown that the prototype loco was 'actually' painted as such. Coincidentally, the prototype colours just happened to be LGB colours! Maybe blind Freddy believed that rubbish. Painted boiler cladding did not exist at the time as paints were not able to tolerate the heat, so the 2028D is closer to being accurate than the 2018D. That being said, 'Russian blue' was not as 'blue' as the LGB rendition.
I do not know why the smilies are in the text, I was writing the loco model number.

so has anyone ever seen this elongated version of lettering? all ive ever seen is the version posted on the green tender
tim soon youll have a bloody red one too!!

LGB i think had the market at the time the 2018 came out and it could have been pink and would have sold

while most of the Russia or Russian iron ive seen is a much colder darker blue grey, i think ive actually seen lighter colors not too far away from the 2028-then again it might have been painted

sometimes, you know, the tail wags the dog , and folks copy incorrect examples

i too prefer the blue, and just got this off ebay for a very very good price-unrun!
i cannot imagine anyone actually thinking the boilier was prototypically bright red-
but certainly an eye catcher in the store and in the garden

i hated it ....but never painted mine.....and like all things LGB ...it has grown on me a great deal...especially when toned down with all mineral brown cars behind!

now as with many LGB things, change the colors to a something duller
-think of the boiler in dark red or maroon-and no bright red anywhere -might be closer to a period 'feel'-seems i saw one just this way, a repaint with some great detail lining and rock guards on the black pilot, in an older LGB catalog on the back page liner-looked very much like a Mason in feel

looking forward to seeing your deluxe version
when it arrives

Hi Steve,

The longer lettering is as the 'official' photo of the Cooke Loco Works moguls as new. It would be quite possible that one was relettered by the DSP itself so I think the either could be correct(after an accident to the tender?), whwn new it was shaded . I built my mogul on the Bachmann 'Big Hauler' chassis; here is a photo of that -

There was an article re these on the Dec 1998 Model Railraoder - they had the colour wrong (it is all blue - nort so they were the first black locos of the DSP.

The boiler is mid metallic grey, and is the 'steel version of metalcote. My Mason Bogie is the gunmetal version and that looks (inside) almost black; the latest bogie (the 2 8 6) is the lightest - meant to be American iron.

'Russian' or the 'American version iron has long been a contentious subject! The blue is thought to be a reflection of a blue sky, and even in cloudy england I have seen that effect on my locos. The Russian version is said to have been darker that the home grown (American) version - I have my versions of both, using the very good Humbrol Metalcote paints - buff them up when dry, and then varnish them: that dulls the shine, but adds protection to the finish.

peter as usual you have done a beautiful bit of work
good info on the iron issue too
and ive actually seen a derelict side wall of a tender in Como, standing in forn tof the roundhose, with the shadowed lettering-a repaint im certain but seemingly accurate-somehow i have it in my head that the shadowing was later-like consolidations and the big bogies ???dont know if this is correct -or simply that those are the models i think ive seen with shadowing-

BUT
has anyone seen another LGB 2028 with my style of lettering and not the green's style ???been combing old mags and catalogs and ive never seen it in this lengthened version on a stock 2028-

Peter it is amazing what eliminating the red and gold dome bands does for the realistic appearance of your work

where do you get the wonderful detail lining/fancy decorative woprk for you loco-the domes headlamp etc? i love that type of decoration, but i cannot do that free hand-really adds to your work peter-that porter mogul you did also had amazing lining and paint too

so did you notice the UP, D and G lettering on the box?

follow up
i learned, from the ROth LGB guide i recnetly snagged, that there were two issues of the 2028 d -the 1988 original-and apparently the ONLY version in the stock LGB photo in the catalogues-had the same lettering (more compacted) as the 2018 red mogul-the fisrt version has no rerailers on the tender and a gold lantern suport as well

mine is the 88-89 version, with yellow rerailers and elongated lettering scheme-black lantern support

FYI

Very good;y looking Steve. I always like the stuff you do.

Steve,
my 29182A Mogul arrived a few weeks ago. Exactly as described. The factory sound is excellent (far better than the earlier Mogul versions). It looks exactly like the earlier mid-80's South Park Moguls and I believe this is why I only paid the same as the prices normally associated with the 2018'D' model. One had to really look at the photographs to realise it was the 2005 limited release version with decoder and sound.

oh yes Tim
it has all the gooides-lighted firebox, digital sound, better drive train
good eye
good running!
