LGB Mogul problem

My old LGB Mogul is causing trouble. It works fine for a few minutes, then starts to slow down, lacking traction especially in the slope. Runs slowly, even with regulator at top speed. I dismantled it, found nothing wrong with the gearbox and connections, gave it new power pickups. No change.
Could it be the motor or something else ? Any ideas gladly welcome, I like this loco.

If it works ok at first then slows, that sounds like it may be in need of lubrication and moving parts are tightening up as they warm up due to excessive friction. The motor may be faulty and drawing too much current - this can cause it to heat up and tighten up.

Try a little oil on all bearings, including the motor shaft bearings. Only a small amount is needed - too much oil causes as many problems as too little!

I endorse the above post, and would like to add that it may indeed be a motor problem caused by oil inside the motor. As the motor warms up the oil flows to where it's not welcome.
Have a look at this topic http://www.gscalecentral.net/tm?m=1237&high < Link To http://www.gscalecentral....m?m=1237&high , post number 6 in particular gives an idea of the different current consumption of good and duff motors.

Thanks for your input. It seems either the motor is out, or it's a lubrication problem. It makes me wonder if I might have made a mistake, some time ago, when I applied grease on the gears, rather generouslly (conductive grease to be precise, because it was all I had handy at that time). Could it be the problem ? And how do I remove the excess of grease ?

My experience would suggest both.

Wipe any excess grease off using a cloth or paper towel. Strip the motor as in the topic referred to in my previous post and use the recommended solvent to degrease it. If the loco is old enough you could be lucky and have the earlier, much easier to strip and reassemble, motor

its hard to tell
but heres what i would do
strip the box and clean everything with detergent water -dry-re lube with proper lube

on the motor only-removed-one can use denatured alcohol to thouroughly remove grease

use a swab or pipe cleaner too
then -LIGHTLY spray electrical lube cleaner into motor and thoroughly blow out excess-thoroughly

this should help locate the problem

i think its likely the motor

I cleaned the excess of grease as best as I could and it seems to work! Thanks everyone for your precious advice.
