LGB Passenger Car Size Question

Would anyone know if the proportions of the 300 mm US style passenger cars have the same proportions, excluding length of course, as the standard full length wood coaches? Basically are the height and width the same?

Dan,
the 'shorty' US passenger coach is a basic four wheel LGB body with clerestory roof and bogie/truck underframe. Apart from a slight height increase from the clerestory roofline the other dimensions (width/length) would be the same as the generic starter set coach.

Yes, but are the width and height the same as a typical LGB full length wood coach? My reason for asking is that I have just purchased two Pennsylvania full length coaches and was thinking of using the shorty baggage car for my battery car behind the loco. I would like if the proportions were correct.

i gots em

WPY shorty baggages.-
They look to match my full size WPY passenger cars. Have I measured? No.
They have an ever so slightly wider roof and body. You cannot interchange body parts.

Height of body appears to be the same. While I haven't measured, Dan, I eyeballed these for you prior to responding. They are really close. So close id say they are the same, visually. Identical to the mm? I cant say. But maybe a mm difference, if any.

Do they look really close when run together, in width and height? Absolutely.
Could you splice two shortys to make a single double door baggage? Probably.

They are so close, that they look like they are from the series, imho.

hope that helps

"hope that helps"

Yes it does Steve, thank you.

Tim,
I do have some starter coaches, but of the European type. I can see in the photos of the coaches I am looking at on Ebay, that the clearstory seems to be more pronounced on the shorty coaches. I am waiting for the two full length coaches to arrive, so I won't have anything solid to go by until they do. All of this may go away if the price of the shorty baggage car gets out of hand.

Dan,
personally, I would not mix and match the shorter baggage car with the 'full length' cars. The shorty cars are a caricature/cartoonish type offering. They look great when run together.

I remember when the shorty baggage cars were well over $100.00 and far more in price than a typical full length coach. I believe that their production numbers and thus supply was very limited, thus explaining the high price.

When surplus LGB American Christmas coaches were plentiful and cheap ($24,99 at Ridge Road) I purchased numerous cars and converted my four wheel "Lake George & Boulder" coaches to the 'American' clerestory look, complete with shorty baggage cars. I had a six car rake of both yellow cars and red cars. In 1993 LGB released the red Lake George & Boulder coach with the clerestory roof moulding but a typical Euro four wheel underframe.

Oh and what happened to my leftover Christmas coach bodies? Well, the Euro parts salvage from the Lake George & Boulder cars were fitted to the Christmas coach bodies and then flogged off on eBay, thus recouping my expenses in full.

Very good Tim. Ebay does have a use for us. .

Alittle late but I measured my LGB starter set coaches against the LGB full length coaches. The roofline springs from the same height, off the rails, on both types. However, the big difference is in the width. The starter set coaches are a full 3/8" wider.

Just needs to be that wide so you could get more baggage in it (aka batteries) ;), also shorter vehicles can sometimes be wider in real life as you get less centre through on corners.

You want to run that one by me again Steve?
