LGB SHAY Help...

Noticed a different sound then usual while running... I took it of the track to inspect. The tender (motors) is NOT the source of the "sound" or problem it all moves fine. The engine main body IS where the problem is. It's lubricated ok. So, I put it on its side without the tender and manually spun the drive shaft by hand. It moves perfectly in reverse direction but when I go forward spinning the shaft it sort of "binds" at the same two spots each rotation... again not in reverse tho. I see nothing visible obstructing any moving parts and it appears the 2 trucks and gears are not the source of the problem. It does rotate forward it just requires more force to rotate. It seems like the binding is in the cam-cylinder-rod area but can't be 100% sure. Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks for your help!

I didn't think LGB made a Shay? Are you referring to the Bachmann model?

Nick,
Aster made a three-truck 'Westside Lumber Co.' Shay for LGB. A very desirable and very, very expensive model.

Doh - should have thought of that. Never seen one, I bet it's rather splendid.

greg i dont have the aster shay
but heres a thought for you

asters sometimes have screws work loose-this i do know first hand
i know youve checked these already but
so
1 i would check each and every screw-including any on the wheels themselves as well as on the shaft, and thing holding the shaft, etc
2 the other thing, which makes little sense given that reverse feels smooth-is to check the wheels gears themselves-either some foreign object or damage to the gears-i might start with a toothbrush cleaning each and every gear thread-

i think it must either be the gears or the shaft alignment, somehow, or the u joints
and the cam assembly-perhaps something is/has bent or mis-aligned-theres so much going on in these little things -and they need lube (at least my bachman does)
patience and perseverence WILL reveal the issue
