LGB sound unit

Hi there, Are there any wizards out there that know anything about electronics??
I would like to attempt to build my own capacitor sound storage / battery back up for an LGB sound unit, does anyone have a wiring diagram for the item? I notice it looks like there is something else in the circuit as well as the Capacitor/battery. Does anyone know what it is??
 
Neil Robinson's your man for this one?

He designed a circuit using 4 capacitors and a voltage regulator....

Alternatively just use a 9V PP3 type battery connected to the common -ive and 9V +ive terminals on the sound unit.
IMHO it would be wise, if using a rechargeable battery, to disconnect the battery from the sound unit before charging. It is possible to do this using a switched socket in order to avoid dismantling anything to access the battery.

Thanks for the rapid details. I have made several of these but I tried to order some more capacitors from Rapid last year & they had been deleted from the catalogue.
I have found these work well on the LGB sound units but give problems with on board sound units which are pre-installed on new locos.
I have used 7808 regulators. The 8 v output works fine & the 1 A output limits the charging current to a more realistic amount ( & Rapid sell them).

Glad to be of assistance, with hindsight I too would go for the 7808 regulator. I'll modify the diagram I have on file accordingly but I'll leave the one in my post alone otherwise the topic may not make good sense.

Thanks Niel that is just what I was looking for, a great help. Whilst we are on the topic what did you use for a plug to couple to the sound unit ? I have tried Maplins so far in vain for something to marry up but it seems peculiar to LGB.

I went ahead and purchased a couple of these plug today but found that they were too small, The storage plug on the sound unit is a grey sockect and is considerably larger (at least on this one a0 than the other plugs. does anyone else know what plugs would fiT ???

Very strange as those are the plugs I use. The plug is a bit smaller than the socket but the pin spacing should be the same. I just wonder if Maplins have supplied the wrong plugs.

I owe you an apology, I went back and tried again and by carefully bending the pins down I found the plug went on a treat,
I expected the plug to be an exact fit and did not expect to have to tweak it, so thanks for that and sorry for doubting.
This brings me to further questions, I tried the 9v battery option ( as I have not ordered the capacitors yet) and this worked a treat but 2 interesting points,
1) the battery seems to affect the voltage/speed relationship ie the loco runs faster but has a slow chuff. would this be overcome by using capacitors?
2) I expected that by using the battery option the sound ( shoveling etc ) would continue until the battery ran out, but this does not seem to be the case is that normal ? and do I need to put a switch in circuit to stop the battery draining?

All the battery does is power the unit at low speed when the track volts are not high enough to produce a decent sound. It should not affect the speed of the chuff, only make it chuff at a slower speed.
When the loco stops the battery will keep the unit going for a couple of minutes until it shuts down, exactly the same as the capacitors. There is no need of a switch as some of my batteries have been in locos for several years.
To get spot on "chuffing" you need to synchronise the sound unit to the wheel rotation. LGB make the parts but do not sell them as spares. I have a Massoth "synchroniser" on test at the moment & it seems to work OK.
