January 2009 I bought brand new from my local stockist an LGB Track Cleaner #21670 locomotive. Yesterday whilst cleaning my track (what a brilliant job it did!) I noticed that the running number is 1 (one) on one side and 2 (two) on the other - is this a mistake or are they all like this and if so, why?

Its just to make you think you have more than 1 loco!!

There was a trend years ago in the smaller scales to paint coaches in different liveries on each side , I know some pics were published in the model press, but I dont think it got as far as locos!!

Many years ago I was into TT scale, I used to paint all my Tank Locomotives with a different number on each side. With a return loop you get 2 loc's for your money. Sadly it does not work well for tender locomotives.

The numbers are probably on the doors - some of them drivers can't tell right from left :rolf:
Apparently when testing new livery ideas the railway companies would paint the two sides of a loco in different colours to get an idea of what it looked like; imagine the consternation if one slipped through painted Crimson Lake one side and GWR green the other.
