I just bought one of these locos but no instruction book. 8|
Can anyone tell me what the knob on the roof is for? If anyone knows of [strike]des[/strike] instructions in PDF form it would be a help. Finally Mike mentioned cleaning behind the grinding wheels, anyone else got tips to keep the beastie running smoothly?
Thanks in advance.

I think the knob regulates the speed of the cleaning wheel motor; is it an MTS or analogue version?

Annie Log, anything else gets me confused (not hard, trust me). :rolf:

The knob on the roof is for controlling the speed of the Loco
if you turn it up full the Loco speed is restricted (runs slower) which allows you to use more power, which in turn increases the speed of the grinding wheels.
The faster the grinding wheels turn the better the clean and the less bouncy the front end seems to be, you will find a balance between speed and power with a bit of practice
Be warned it moves forward at a fairly (good-brisk) steady pace to clean well, but if like me you are using a TE its a bit slow to stop, so be carefull at the end of any sidings etc.
At one time i hit reverse, only to find it ignores the knob and takes of like a scalded cat :rolf:

NEVER NEVER - LEAVE IT UNATENDED

IT WILL ALWAYS STALL AND GRIND AWAY TO ITS HEARTS CONTENT
How do i know this (any one want a set of LGB R3 points with built in wheel chock's) :bleh::bleh::crying::crying:

I found that to get the best results - run once in each direction (depending how dirty your track is) then wipe over with a dry cloth. Then sit back and admire the tiger stripes

Its a noisy beast so be prepared for some funny looks from the neighbours, and SWIMBO :laugh: but it works well.

for the yellow analog version at least

the potentiometer control on the cab roof wheel is for adjusting the rate of the locomotive

this allows you to travel fast medium or slow , and controls the amount of time the cleaning wheels are on any portion of track-ie slow rate of travel means longer time cleaning the track section-more thorough

faster means less time-

and it also allows you to synch the speed cleaning loco to a pusher or other loco

the roof pot only works, as i recall, in cleaning mode Ie flashy lights mode,

and, i am postive, not at all in reverse

<edit update>

looks like rob beat me to it
and i agree never leave it unattended
and be careful about power surges/spikes-the will damage the board, or blow the lights etc

and blow out the cleaing dust regularly and mind that eh tiny plastic threads that come from the gringin disc wheels is removed and kept clear of the axels

i tend to run mine about medium speed or faster-both directions several times
they will stall on wet or sappy track on a grade-the gritty grinding wheels in such ocnditions have more purchase on teh track and can push the loco back -or sometimes an incomprehensible mambo effect!

mind too those roof bubbles-the do pop off -they are most difficult to replace

Soooo nothing new there then. My thanks to Nemo for allowing one on the line (i.e. SWMBO didn't shout) in the first place, to the rest of you a big thank you also.
Cheers,
Ian
Incidentally, it climbs this without trouble
