LGB Tram Side Advertisments

Too much of a good thing is nearly enough.

I had been thinking for sometime about the uninteresting advertisements carried on my LGB tram fleet....Chlorodent, Martini etc. I wanted something a bit different, yet personal to me at the same time, and came up with the idea ( with the help of James ) to make a set based on those carried on the local Lowestoft Corporation buses in the 1950s.
It was easier to decide than actually do, as always when dealing with a computer, and the resulting adverts took around two hours each to produce to a reasonable standard and keep to the faith of the original, not helped by the originals being wider and shorter!
Anyway here are the results so far.

As just about no one has the foggiest what the originals looked like I will post a photo of a bus carrying them.

Every car has different advertisements on each side...we just love making the job harder.

The motor cars all carry the route details which again are varied, but are all on routes 1 to 3.

I was fortunate to have taken quite a number of colour photos at the time to work from

I did help that I used to drive the buses in service as well !
Another reason to wallow in some nostalgia

Nice touch Syd....

All these advertisements were hand painted on to the buses so lasted for many years in most cases.

The LGB purists will be pleased that I have resisted repainting any into my fleet livery although that is planned when i source some tatty examples. However I do have some steam hauled cars with tram locos but my favorites are those hauled by Stainz locos in fleet livery.

Thanks Gizzy, it certainly gives a personal touch to the fleet.
Here is the Blue two car set.

This is the last one before I bore everyone to tears ! I think you have got the idea.
Excuse the photos being taken on the workshop floor, it is too cold outside for wimps.

My old man was a mechanic on the London transport buses for over 30 years and our back yard was full of those panels with the advertisement's, on he used them for fence panels when the wood ones rotted away!!

well worth the work Syd,and James..Looks brilliant, and as you say, gives them that more local, personal feeling as well.

Cheers

Ade

There is only one advert that should be compulsory on every fleet of trams.

Hmm. I always thought it was "Shop at Binns"

That was probably on the other side!

I think you are missing the point here a bit !
Like many other Corporations etc, Lowestoft had many national advertisements on the trams and buses.....Haig, Dulux,London & Manchester Insurance,Typhoo,Saxa Salt,Cerebos Salt,Bisto...the list just goes on. What I wanted was the truly local adverts that ONLY appeared on Lowestoft buses and mainly consisted of just one advertisement on just one bus in the fleet. Lowestoft was a very small concern, with just a handful of trams, which were replaced by a small number of buses, and only one basic route to operate on. It was this local identity that I wanted to portray on my trams, and which to my knowledge has not been done before by anyone. I doubt if anyone in the modelling world has ever heard of these advertisers.

Morlings was a family business in Lowestoft and only advertised on ONE Corporation bus ! I lived next door to the shop until I was 5 years old. As I said the project was an adventure into Nostalgia for myself, but I thought I would share the experience with everyone.

I forgot to add the photo of the original advert as previous posts. The bus is a 1945 Guy Arab with a very angular 'Utillity' bodywork by Massey Brothers of Wigan, the Government not allowing radius corners at the time. The advert was painted by Massey Bros. when the bus was built and remained unchanged through a repaint until the early 1960s.

My apologies. My tongue in cheek post referred to a rather larger fleet, namely Sunderland. I have yet to see a Sunderland tram or bus in any photo between about 1910 to 1970 without a shop at Binns advert.
