LGBachmann 0-4-0 Porter

Howdy, just thought I'd share this little project. I bought a Big Hauler Porter tank set on ebay for a song. When it got here I sat it down and fired it up to the sound of grinding and motor spinning. Opened it up and the gears were all in pieces! After some searching I was unable to find any replacements and honestly if I was going to rebuilt I had zero interest in using the noisy Bachmann power. So this is my project, fitting a rebuilt LGB 2020 motor block to this Porter and still having it resemble something realistic. I will also be running a 5vdc smoker with a step down, LED lights and fire flicker to run on DC. I will post progress and pics if anyone is interested!

I too will watch with interest as I have the a porter body. in particular how the con rods will be attached to the crank pins !

I think I would be tempted to make some new metal con rods, cutting just the circulator attachment bit off the plastic one leaving a good long existing rod to super glue the new ones to.

A little more done today, my garage was 39F so it was a little chilly. Motor block mounts made, block connected and test ran! Rods are currently zip tied up out of the way until all distances are final.

Test fitting some of the electronics, a 5vdc LGB smoke generator, 5-12vdc warm white led headlight and flickering orange and red leds for the fire box. I decided to go satin colonial red with satin black smoke box and roof.

So I ordered these 5v smoke generators and the Seuthe fluid and they came today! Oddly enough I found a place in Italy that specializes in I assume super intricate nativity scenes for $17 each, $7 shipping and it only took 5 days!!! They even have flickering fires lol...it's called Holyart. Anyways, wired up the step down with a rectifier and tuned it down to 5.5vdc and fitted JST connectors so I can wire it to the motor block but still remove everything. Seems to work a treat!

I test fit the micro switches to turn the smoke and fire box flicker on and off! Too cold to paint so I started cobbling together some passenger cars based loosely on the grizzly cloe cars. I used some elements from the closed Saxon 1k cars, some park benches and some fancy shelf brackets shrunk down!

Wow! Is that real or model???
It is real - a 20 inch gauge funicular railway! First opened in 1895. It still runs, but now with just one car on each line. As originally built there was a pair of open cars on each track. The cars were rebuilt in the early years of the last century and again (by me) in 1990's. Shipley Glen is lovely little valley near Saltaire (Shipley, West Yorkshire). In it's heyday it would carry around 17,000 a day up and down and visiting the funfair, etc.

I wanted to reply but thought it prudent to leave for you as I knew you were proudly involved with the line before you left ‘Gods own country’ for other parts.

Worth a visit next time I'm in the area

I have used the LGB and USA trains motor blocks in the Bachmann trolley, added weights and can pull 2 trailing trolley cars with no problem. Axles are slightly out of place but not very noticeable. I used Quik Grip glue to keep the block mounted and found this glue will allow one to easily remove the motor block in the future.
