Lighting up a Sachsen Meyer IVK

Yesterday I started a project on one of the Saxon Meyers that is currently base here on the Nutbrook.
I bought these off Mark (Muns) at G Rail last weekend.

First of all the tedious job of soldering wires onto the terminals of the bulb holder. These are quite small and best being held by narrow nose pliers. A quick dab was all that was required, any more and the plastic holder started to melt.

Then I used heat shrink insulation, Gaynors hairdryer came in handy here.

I forgot to say that the project is to fit valve gear inspection lights to the loco like on the Harz 2-10-2 and the Piko BR64 tank. This aids the drivers/ fitters to check the loco over during night time running.
The loco is stripped down and a total of 6 lights are to be fitted (3 on each side) As can be seen in the photos the lead weights get in the way a bit, so an 8mm hole was drilled through them, then a 5mm hole was drilled through the bottom of the loco. The 8mm hole allows the bulb and holder to go through, a 5mm hole allows the bulb to pass through but not the holder. Superglue was used to hold the holder to the inside of the loco. (excuse the wiring, it`s a bit messy but nothing can be seen with the lid on).

The bulbs protrude below the water tanks, but are difficult to see during normal running conditions.

And finally the finished result. The loco has two bulbs on the front bogie and one one the rear. They are wired into F2 on the Massoth XLS and CV 53 has been set to number 3 to give a warm glow. Sorry about the quality on last few as its getting dark and cold and raining, but you can see the effect.

Lovely job mate. Very effective.

Hope you don't mind, I've edited your posts so that the piccies show normal size rather than thumbnails.
Thanks Garath.
I've tried to do that, but cannot seem to be able to get normal size piccys up on this new forum. Wasn't a problem on the old forum. What am I doing wrong?

Post pictures in 'insert as display' mode Steve.

Great work - makes it unique in a really good way.

brilliant idea, and well exacuted.. like it ???

Really nice Steve, I like the effect a lot! Its a good idea and works well!

Please don't take this as a criticism, but I was just thinking... Is it possible to turn down the voltage to those lights only using the Massoth chip? Just it might be nice to a slightly more gentle diffuse glow? Sometimes I find just a quick brush over the tip of the LED with a light sandpaper is enough to diffuse and soften the light. LEDs tend to be really directional, throwing lots of light straight out front, but a wee scuff forces the light out in a more overall pattern.

Really cool, keep it up! :)

Nice!
So, there is nothing new under the sun?

"I remember when 'boy-racer' lights were steam-powered"..
;) :D ;D

Cheers Gavin.
Yes I can turn down the bulbs by reducing CV53. They are not as bright as they look on the photo though as its getting dark when the piccys were taken and the camera went into slow shutter mode, thus over exposing the picture giving the bulbs a brighter appearance. These are blubs and not LED's and have a glass outer.

Sorry Steve, my mistake! I thought they were LEDs so I think I'll just keep quiet... Better that way!

Anyway, it looks really good and is a nice prototypical addition!
