I am thinking about getting a whistle for my Accucraft Mortimer and am looking for some advice. The ones I have heard (and no offence is meant to their manufacturers) all sound a bit thin and watery, with not enough resonance. Can anyone recommend a more "meaty" one to fit Mortimer? Thanks in advance.

Yes I agree, the DJB whistle is excellent. You can see one on my Caradoc at http://www.gardenrailwayclub.com/locos/developing-caradoc

I also have one on my Lawley and there is a video of the loco with the whistle and Summerlands chuffer in evidence at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKloB9yK7ZM

The Evensford and Midland's Earl also has a DJB whistle (and Summerlands chuffer), which is a different fitting as it has to go under the loco and also a slightly deeper sound.

The fitting of it can be seen at http://www.gardenrailwayclub.com/locos/earl-arrives and it can be heard as the loco approaches Wadenhoe at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T96tLMkNTCg

These are all radio controlled and my r/c fitting method has developed over the last couple of years. I now use a wire method of control which can be seen in some of the pictures. This allows manual operation of the whistle too. The Lawley has a rigid rod connection to the servo but this will be replaced at the next major overhaul.

Hope this helps.

I have fitted my Accucraft " Earl " and " Edrig " with whistles from Regner. They have a nice sound and work with steam pressures from 20 psi up to the safety valve setting. Earl's is mounted underneath, and the Edrig is between the gas tank and the frame , completely hidden. The Regner parts have fittings that mate up to the Accucraft metric fittings perfectly. The valve that Regner uses is a very solid unit. I have had no problems in over 2 years of use.

Charles, have you got any photos of the whistle fitting attached to your Countess and Edrig?

Here are some photos of how I did my Earl and Edrig whistles. I used the Regner valve and whistle parts for both of my locomotives. In both cases I had to machine a fitting to attach the valve to the steam takeoff point that I used. Dave Bailey supplied the extra long banjo bolt used on both engines. First photo is of the Earl , next is the whistle underneath.
Edrig is the last photo.

Thanks Charles. That's a couple of very neat installations there. It's also intersting to see where you've fitted the regulator servo on the Countess.

By using the bracket, you could fit at least throttle control to almost any engine. With the roof in the closed position you can't see the servo at all. I have used the same type of mount on my Accucraft 2 cylinder Shay for the last 2 years. The mounting has given me no problems at all. I use the Hitec HS 81 MG servos and they seem to tolerate the heat very well. I have not had a servo failure yet.

In the photo of Edrig the servo linkage is just behind the throttle lever , it is remoted from a servo mounted at the front of the right side tank. I have the forward and reverse unit mounted on the same panel and it is connected with a short linkage to the reverse arm under the engine. In operation nothing is visable except the servo linkage going to the arm behind the throttle .

Charles M :)

My whistles all sound great... one (5" Lonergan ) exactly like a B&O passenger whistle, one (3" parts built long bell) like a steamboat, and the third (2" Crosby) like an interurban..... not sure how you'd mount any of them on an itty bitty loco, though...
