Loads of Fun in 7/8ths

Hi folks
I have been having a good tidy up in the workshop and ended up with a Victorian bronze cannon barrel (1.5kg), a piece of brass bar room foot rest, a broken stationary steam engine (a visitor knocked it off its shelf), a 1930's radio valve and an old Pifco test meter. Just perfect to make some fun loads for a 7/8ths train of scrap metal and parts for the new Summerlands computer (circa 1935 remember).

So I put together a train with two locos, disturbed Bodkin the cat (see opening frames) and made a little film. I confess that I was rather pleased with the sound ;-)

You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5W2JcGuvHdA

And on my website as usual.
Cheers
Chris

Nice sound and interesting (quite plausible) load! Enjoyed.

Loved it!

I would never have thought to double head one of my Regners with a 'normal' steam loco. I bet that's how the even better 'chuff' sound is produced. So, it's into the garden for me tomorrow morning to test out the theory!

Thanks for the kind words guys!
Tom - yes the lead loco is effectively pulling against a heavy load as the Regner will only go at its own pace. When I did this in a previous video with Millie, she kept slipping, but Betty is a little heavier and did not lose her footing at all. It was just a matter of finding the sweet spot with the gas and the regulators and then running about with the camera and a bean bag for ten minutes.
Have fun tomottow!
Cheers
Chris

that was a great video
was the roundhose pulling faster than the regner, and thus the 'working' chuff?
and if so, also the controlled speed (one of the most consistent and realistic i can recall-steady and slow) might also be the regner and its low gearing keeping things so consistent? i did hear a significant slow down in one scene -clearly on grade before entiernig the picture and cresting the hill

a most creative train and passengers and crew

do tell about the roundhose loco and what is started as and how you changed it please
thanks

lovely video
so that's where Iraq's supergun ended up in the 90s
nice Cat too

It's often said there's a prototype for everything.
These video frames are from the Bala Gala 1999.

Chaloner double heads Alice, and then Holy War.

Of course, they do things differently in Wales, with the de Winton leading.

Thanks Steve - it was such a pleasure making it once I found the right settings, as it just chuffed round. You are absolutely right that the Roundhouse is straining against the speed control by the Regner. The Regner regulator was just cracked open and would not have managed the gradients. I was amazed that the Roundhouse didn't slip once and I have to say that one of my favourite parts is the one you refer to where the train is out of shot - the slowing down was where there is a slight hump due to an expanding tree root.

Having said all that - I do go to great lengths to make sure the locos run pretty slowly in all my films:)

Right - the Roundhouse based Betty is, in fact, a Bertie chassis and boiler with Katie valve gear and a cut down and modified Katie body. I bought it as a project at Exeter Show and it is written up in Garden Rail 193 and thanks to Tag, you can see a scan of the article here:

Thanks Paul - and a "supergun" - now that's an idea:)
I'll pass the message on to Bodkin!

Great photos Rob - I couldn't make the video play, but I get the idea!

Thinking about it, it would still have worked with Vincent leading with Betty shoving from behind.
Cheers

Another well done video, Chris. The sound was great, too. (It reminds me of my Caradoc with your chuffer).
The load is highly creative. I loved the voltage meter and the 'valve' especially.
Thanks.

Another blast from the past. Simply loved it. Wonderful sound and what a load being hauled. Thank you very much.
