Loco Size comparison

I am considering building a roundhouse loco shed. I have a Bachmann consolidation and hope 1 day to have a 3 truck shay and possibly the K-27 (and others, but I think these are the biggest) . Here's the question. Are these locos longer, wider or higher? Does anyone have comprable sizes and/or pics of them. If I'm building it, I should think/dream of the future.

The Bachmann Spectrum Locos are not bigger than they should be.

But as they are 1:20,3 models, they ARE bigger than the 1:22,5 stuff.

For the Connie a height of about 8 inches without track will be enough. But i would take at least 9 inches. Some space on top never is a fault, and the height is normally not the problem.

As my red Connie has a K-27 plow in front, it needs a bit more space in width than "normal" Connies. I measured about 160mm, what is 6,3 inches. So 7 inches could be enough to drive through.

For my bridges (and therefore "driving"-operation, while a roundhouse is "switching" operation) i choose 7,5 inches. Dont forget that all those measures ar for straight track. Everytime there is a curve, u need to have more space in width!

nice pics,

i would like to have a K-27, but i fear its sizes (not for track measurments, more for optical fitting).

We´ve totally forgotten the Shay.

The Shays are relatively slim. You´ll never have a problem go through where a K-27 will.

I can confirm that the K27 is a big beggar. Yesterday was spent mostly moving the double track apart and widening, where possible, overbridges.
The puzzle is that my first K27 had a plough and managed to go around without much trouble except for one R2 section which I relaid.
The replacement loco has no plough (yet) but it has managed to clout locos running on the opposite track in numerous places.
It can pass obstacles on one circuit but hit them on the next, the reason being that there is a tendency for it to slew slightly coming off a curve. Different speeds lead to a greater or lesser angle. Presumably, this is a product of the intentional lateral movement in the drive axles.

One thing that does intrigue me - put the K27 alongside an Annie and I find that there is far greater forward pressure against my hand from the Annie than the K27 whatever the track voltage. I don't have any suitable stock yet for the K27 so can't compare its pulling power. My stock is suitable but the couplings are not compatible with anything I have currently.

Thanks for the replies. What I'm really after is actual sizes and comparison pics. Now it may be that that's what Spike has put on his reply, but I cannot see the pics for some reason.
Thanks again

That's odd. As soon as I posted this reply, the pictures in Spikes reply showed themselves. That K-27 is a big fella.

A Shay at 1:20.3 is not especially large - I can only comment on the Accucraft model, but it does have a spark arrestor which screws on to the chimney, and that can make it quite tall. For this reason, I don't run mine with the spark arrestor, but I'm not sure whether the Bachammn model has one or not.

Helpfully unhelpful :bigsmile::bigsmile:
