hi all,

Has anyone got one of these? if so are they any good? Would be interested to see pictures of the boiler and cylider layout if at all possible.

Thanks.

I have one that I bought from Ebay. It had been converted to a battery Job, not sure what this says about the Steam Power Unit as I have never played with one. I have seen them running and they do appear to run quite well, but not sure how long for or how controllable they are. In its live steam guise he front is a single driver with a carrying bogie at the rear.

Nice job Steve!

very nice steve. Love to see more pics and details on how you made it ( where did you get the boiler and cylinders if not home made and what the front power bogie looks likme)

I will need to take some pics of a small enough size for posting.
The boiler I made myself and the engine is a "Unit Steam Engine" USE allows the engines to be stacked together for multiple cylinder configurations.
The drive line is a mixture of gears and chain drive.

The boiler uses a ceramic burner for heat.

The original locomotion railbus is made of plywood so I did the same.

I will try to take some pics this weekend.

Steve

Here are the Pics as promised.

Thanks
Steve

I also thought a rail bus could be made with a Millie or a Ruby as the running chassis. Ruby would be a good chassis now they are being delivered with 1/2 bore cylinders. I built the railbus like I did, but had assumed the original was all metal, later I found out that the main body was made of wood.

Thanks
Steve

Many thanks guys.

Steve did you make the boiler and cylinders? Must say like your railbus a lot.

Bradypus- looks like the wheels are inside framed? and looks like the powerplant has a lot of scope too.

Thanks again for posting,

Simon

The boiler I made myself it is a simple center flue without cross tubes. The engine is three Unit Steam Engines ganged together, I also Made a reversing valve similar to a Mamod.

Locomotion did also make a battery version.

Yes I was aware of the battery one, mine was a botch converted live steamer. You would not believe the horrors that were present in the wiring and conversion work. I decided to start again and fitted Insulating Wheels to the Bogie, a new rear LGB Trailing Bogie and try to clear up much of the mess on the roof as I could. Oh I also made a new chassis for it of MDF as the original was again far too botched. This is still a WIP (obviously). Jobs to do include tidying up the wiring looms and some more patching up of the paint work, it has already been resprayed. It has also been fitted with an Aristo RC set up. Works like a dream now. There is also a Trailer Car that is pretty well OK now. Some pictures of the power car:-

Mine was originally painted in the two tone red and Creme that I find so attractive of the Harz lines. In fact it was that that attracted me to it on Ebay in the first place. But it was so scrappy that I decided to repaint it.

Looking at those pictures, I may have to do a new roof too! Oh the impetuous of Ebay Purchasing. However I still think that I got a bargain and I have had lots of fun doing the work.

Hey Jon, at least you've got the original sides!!

Really though, it sounds like a major job. It's a plus that you've enjoyed it and are happy with the overall purchase.

Still going I e-mailed the chap. (want to buy a biler and all the steam plant off him) Got a reply today, he is doing a batch later in the year but is recovering from surgery at the moment.

Hi, Here's an image I have of the underside of the engine end. I heard they are good runners, with throttling on the exhaust side instead of the steam side.

Best wishes,
David.
