LSBC Diana build

cocobear

time is not my friend
I began work on a LSBA Diana from castings and drawings I had aquired sometime ago when I bought a big pile of stuff. I have most of the big pieces done and plan to post pictures as they become somewhat presentable. Below is an assembly drawing from the A.J.Reeves website and a picture of the frame awaiting paint. The planned scheme for this loco is a dark green body, wheels, and splashers with a black frame and smoke box. Any thoughts on colors will be apreciated.

I look forward to seeing this project completed?

Keep us posted....

'Tis Gauge 1 Dan. In general M.E. terms one of L.B.S.C's slightly lesser known models, but a good few built over the years.

hi david, i made a similar loco, a duchess last year and am going to do the bodywork (cab etc) before the running season this year. (time permitting) i intend to finish mine in the lms straw lined black with smoke deflectors but yours would look great in brunswick green. there is a vid of it running last year on youtube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J9l18ACH-E if you would like to see. will you be firing with meths? nice wide firebox would be ok for coal..... thanx, martin

Yes it is gauge 1. The plans show coal fired but I have drawn up a meths burner as I am not a fan of chasing the loco about with a tiny shovel. I am thinking of adding deflectors as well. The cylinders, front and rear bogey, and motion are finished now. i will put up some pictures as soon as the paint dries. The boiler is well under way as well. I had assembled the chassis prior to paint and ran it on air. It is a pretty fast build. Martin, your Duchess runs beautifully! The look I am going for is as below but a bit darker.

Chassis, cylinders, wheels and more are now painted. The boiler should be finished by this weekend. I hope to have the cylinders and motion re-installed by then as well.

i thought diana was freelance based on LMS pacific? i made a Britannia but used the wrong size (2 1/8") tube for boiler and everyone thought it was a clan, so i went along with it and numbered it 72010, the one BR didnt build, so the rivet counters could not compare it to prototype. trouble is, i think they are using that number for hengist now. mine was built first tho... ;-).. heres a pic. martin

Martin, looks very much the biso as a Clan. Horsa was the next one after Heingist. Not sure but I think that 3 or so frames were laid out at Crewe for the next batch of 10 when the orders came through to stop production. The frames and any other parts that were built must have been scrapped. Unless there were some parts built that would have acted as spares for the 10 that were built. I am awaiting the Heingist replica with great relish as I think that the Clans were just a nicer lump of metal then the Brits or Duke. Sort of like comparing a Castle to a Manor. Now I just and always have loved Manors for pretty well the same reasons.

Green Park, you are correct. I am just looking for schemes and bits of detail to add. Your Britannia is very nice!! Bolted the cyliders on and need to replumb everything. I will have some pictures of the boiler this weekend.

thanx guys, and there is a website about hengist. going to take them a while to complete i think.. martin

A little more progress last night. I finished the smoke box and just painted it. The splashers are almost finished. I need to go to work now as we are working through the weekend to try and catch up a bit for the 3 days we were closed this week due to snow, hence my quick progress. back to reality.

More progress

blimey, thats coming together quick, be ready for the running season most likely... great job.. martin

The chassis is assembled and running on air!! My airbrush compressor can maintain about 20 PSI while running. It will run on the rollers as low as 12 PSI. It starts to stutter at 11. I hope to get the splashers mounted along with the smoke box tonight.

The tender is in the oven baking on the finish (The Mrs is out shopping) :D. I have the splachers bolted on and the cab roof painted. Hopefully tonight I'll remember to take some pictures before bed. I hope to do a bit of lining this week and god willing, My stanchions might arrive from Wallsall so I can assemble the engine. It has taken for what seems like forever for them to arrive. Is that typical?
