Marklin G1 Pacific

I was going to start a new thread about a similar thing on stationroadsteam but I felt my enquiry to be a little on the bland side of things.. I hope you dont mind me adding this to your thread neil..

I came across the unfortunate city of truro gauge 1 model on this site some weeks ago,

it got me wondering if anyone has any experience with barrett engineering locomotives? it seems they currently make engine kits and rolling stock of faily decent prices.. personally its a little out of my comfort zone being mainline locos vs anything small and cute.. but the appeal is there I admit.. does anyone have one?

I saw that City on SRS too. There was a series of articles in Garden Rail by a guy (in Kiwi I think) building a Barrett LNER J39 - in general it sounded as if it was quite good, he had some issues but they were supportive in helping with any problems. These are fairly typical lower end G1 locos, many are single cylinder, and I think the general idea is they whizz along on the big circular layouts they seem to prefer in that branch of the hobby. I shouldn't expect great controllability, but they seem to be pretty good IMHO.
 
I bought the same - BR18 - from W&C from 950 quid. No box, no instructions. Feeder valve is blocked but otherwise works. Reallz nice engine. I had a thread on it here in the live steam forum.

I never owned or driven a Barrett loco but have seen a few running and have seriously considered the J39.
I think if well built and run-in properly these locos do perform rather well and can represent excellent value.
Controllability is arguably a subjective term in 'Traditional G1' as I'm sure many of the locos have the ability to run at a realistic pace it is just that in general the advocates of this branch of the hobby choose to run at scale speeds more realistic for a land speed record rather than that which was commonplace on steam railways.

Good thing about the J39 is that it can handle 5' radius curves whereas the G1MRA Project needs at least twice that if memory serves me correctly.
