Massoth pulsed smoke generators?

Has anyone here got much hands-on experience of putting the Massoth pulsed smoke units into LGB locos? I'm wondering how easy it is (physically as well the electronics side), especially in smaller locos - it can obviously be done, even in one as small as a Stainz, as this clip shows:

They look quite impressive, and I'm tempted to try one (probably either in my Nicki & Frank S or my Sachsen IVk, before tackling anything as small as a Stainz!) and am interested in any tips, hints or experiences. Most of my locos already have MTS and sound (some factory LGB installations, some Massoth aftermarket units). Do you need a wheel sensor to sync the steam puffs, or does the decoder handle that - at least "closely enough for Government work"?

Thanks in advance for any info!

Oooookay, I should have taken a look at the Massoth website BEFORE posting the question above - I've just answered the last question for myself, that a wheel sensor is NOT necessary, and got a fairly good idea of the electrical hook-up part of the installation - but the Massoth pdf manual doesn't give much useful info on the physical fitting of the unit - just a few vague general notes. So, my original query about personal experiences of fitting into different locos stands, if anyone can help?

I fitted one into a 2080, I will see if I can find any pics etc.

Thanks Mark, that would be great! :D

Were you happy with it? Did you think the end result was impressive enough to justify the cost? Some of the youtube vids I've looked at appear pretty good, while a few others seem only a little better than the standard non-pulsed wisps!

There are 2 different smoke units - 5v and 19v. You can also get a high performance element for the 19v one

Yes, as I understand it the 19v version is for use with Massoth decoders to reduce the amp draw on the function output, while I assume the 5v one is mostly for analogue use.

Couldnt find the pics I wanted (I have one other place to look).
Massoth decoder. If you want loads of smoke go go for a high output heating element - I must get round to ordering some of them.

If I recall, I fixed (read glued) the smoke generator directly under the smoke stack.

Does anyone know who sells Masoth products in the US?

Sorry - looked in the other place and it would seem that if I took some pictures of the smoke generator in situ I havnt got them any more.

Dan,

Have one on order to fit in a kit i'm going to build. Allready have the pulse generator to go on an axle. Will post pic with accurate dimensions when i get hold off it. The Massoth document isn't that great for dimensions.
