Mayflower slate train

Hi folks
Well yesterday the rain stopped for a few hours and the sun came out. Roy Wood came over and we managed to get a few minutes of film of Mayflower in action. She is very skittish with this light train so slow driving was a real challenge!
You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQGt...65/e59bac8d9bba4aedb9a2851a18d47268.jpg[/IMG]

Sweet video Chris. I was just thinking that you were due for a new video. I always look forward to seeing your videos and layout. I love your layout and trackwork. It has so much charm. Would love to see my Cricket run it.

Gawd, sheer poetry in motion. Lovely line, beautiful rolling stock and great locomotion. It just makes you want to begin live steam :admire::admire:

Thanks for the very kind words guys :)

Hornbeam - they are great locos, but beware that build quality varied and there are some worn out old "dogs" out there....

Shawn - oh yes, it would be fun to run your new Cricket here and I should love to film on your superb railroad too! I am looking forward to seeing the film your repaired Forney running in the snow....

And Beavercreek....live steam......you know it makes sense :D
Cheers
Chris

Thanks Chris. Let me know when you want to come to Jersey:party: Would love to see your steamers run on the Kittatinny Mt RR. Just got word my Forney will be back sometime next week and my Lumberjack will also be in.

Superb iconic Vid, brought back memories of my Mayflower also my Monarc which I sold off to a man who knew what to do to sort them both out. In truth they had both become old dogs unlike my old Roundhouse. They were both gathering dust so sadly went. However it has been said and I will say so again, Tom had got an eye for Aesthetics and both Locomotives looked just right. I love Roundhouse RELIABILITY but some of the 'made up design' 0-4-0's with the exception of 'Jack and Staney' look wrong to me. I do NOT of course include the Prototype ones that Roundhouse build as they are all superb.

Oh dear I fear an off thread thing here.

Back on thread, loved the going away shot at the end of the Vid. To those of us who just like to watch trains this is a view that few foters see as they are too busy reviewing their 'front 3/4 pic with Rods Down' rather than watching the Train go into the distance.

Again a Wonderful Vid and thanks for all the time you took on it.

Well thank you for that invite Shawn - though I am not long back from family in Connecticut, so it may be a while.........and I gather airlines are not too keen on gas fired steamers.......:(
I shall just have to keep watching your vids:)
Cheers

Thanks Jon - I really do appreciate your comments:) You raise some interesting points - I would certainly rather work on an old Roundhouse loco than an old Merlin. The piston valves have a habit of wearing out the valve chests - though I believe they can be repaired. Then there are the brass boilers on the early ones etc. Having said that I used to follow Tom Cooper's writings back in the 80's and owe him a lot...and the Mayflower is still the best looking loco!

Regarding camera angles, I have a very small railway so have to try every possibility. Often a slight change of angle makes it look like a different place and I also like the going-away shots. The shot of the loco comng through what appears to be a cutting was by using telephoto with the camera and bean bag plonked on the gate - the first time I have tried that one.

Well I have a merlin hunslet awaiting work. It's a very weak puller and can't work out why- no steam leaks.

Well worn out PTFE pistons is perhaps the first to check, if it has the Beck cylinders. Then possibly worn piston valves or valve gear. Then maybe a restriction in the steam line, assuming that the boiler is reaching pressure....

They are fine looking locos - so good luck!!

Great pictures, I would love to see RH remake the Mayflower but with RH running gear and thier supurb slide valve cylinders. I also also longed to add one of those old Merlin engines to my stable, but its hard to sort out via fleabay when you have a huge pond between you and the seller. I will stick with my Regners for now. Mike

Hm Mr Dodger you are a dreamer of beautiful dreams.

Now I have enough puffers for my modest needs (well probably too many actually) but a Roundhouse Mayflower. Well I think that I may sell my soul for one of them, fitted of course with a Chuff Pipe.

Hey - thanks guys - I had almost forgotten about this one :)

Tony - it really is a very small railway - it is the plants that give most of the visual breaks and I use lots of different camera angles.

I went out to clear the track today - and then it started raining AGAIN!
Cheers
