mini-Bee

Today's project is a mini 'bumble bee'. Cab number is convenience only as Rio Grande did not own Moguls into the 20th century. The bumble bee colour scheme was devised for the 1949 Chicago World's Fair. I have long been wanting to do this mod and finally decided to give it the go ahead. Loco will receive a decoder and sound.

Always liked the Bumble Bee livery. It looks good - and it suits the loco  The only observation is that the grey tends to dominate on the driving wheels with them being solid.

Mick,
the original 'bumble bee', C-16 #268, was painted silver everywhere this locomotive is painted grey. If you think the grey is overdone then take a look at the 'restored' #268.

This livery is actually the Lake George & Boulder stock livery that I have removed the black printing and cab number and redecalled for the Rio Grande. The driving wheels are not 'solid', the grey between the spokes is the grey chassis behind the wheel.

Hi Mick

as if by magic

I have an Accucraft version of this but in its black livery ...unlike Richie's....jealousy building in.........:'(

but I do have one of these Bachmann jobbies. Rio Grande did not have the 4-6-0 after late 1800s but I just like the look and BeaverCreek does have its own roster so a couple of 4-6-0 Annies have crept in

Sorry Tim - it just gave the appearance of the wheels being solid - it must be the camera angle (or my eyesight more likely) it just drew my eyes to the wheels!

Ah, yes Mike - it was a Big Hauler (177) that caused my intended garden tramway to be a railway

Hi Tim
The Bumble Bee #268 is one of my all time favorite locos got a Aristo C-16 a few years back and painted all the drive wheels silver and a few other jobs like moving the air tank from the rear of the tender to the top .
But a few months ago i had the chance to buy (wife could buy) the Accucraft live steam C-16 Bumble Bee .
So i have now sold the Aristo one which was 1/24 scale and now have a larger 1/20 scale loco to go with my Accucraft stock

Richie,
I am indeed a big fan of the Bumble Bee. I also have the Aristo C-16. This is the only new release that Aristo will be making in the entire Classic line. Apparently, the bumble bee loco is the only item that sells. All rolling stock and other versions of the C-16 have met the scrapper's torch. I did enjoy the Classic line up.

Alas, the 1/20.3 scale bee is a little large for me (plus a little outside my price range). I have decided to do another LGB bumble bee, this time in road number '268'. A little unprototypical for a Mogul, but then the loco is not accurate either.

A few alterations since yesterday. I will be making two 'bee's' each slightly different. Obviously, these are not 2-8-0's, but a little licence is taken. #274 has been fitted with a generator, black drive wheels and a black underframe on the tender. Later when the loco is disassembled for decoder, I will fit black footboards beside the boiler.

A new tender has been painted to represent a version of #268. I will number the cab of the loco, fit a yellow generator and also fit black footboards.

This will be the final version of this locomotive, #274. The other, #268, will look similar to first photograph at commencement of this thread. I wanted two 'bee's' but wanted one different but still with a similar look.
