Modifying an LGB Steinz

Hi - my first post here, having just joined!

I have a blue LBG Steinz loco that I'd like to modify to British outline so it looks something like 'Shane' at the Bushmills Railway or 'Douglas'/ 'Duncan' on the Talyllyn Railway (modify back of the cab, change the chimney, take off the salter valves, add running plates etc).

I have a few questions:
[*]Are there any good websites/ articles anyone can direct me to provide a bit of inspiration/ guidance?[*]Is there a company that is a good source of 'bits' like replacement chimneys etc.?[*]The loco is part of a limited edition 'Mannesmann Rohenwork' starter set - is it worth something as a 'limited edition' i.e. would I be better selling the set on and getting an 'ordinary' Steinz to 'butcher' from eBay (the only other bit I use at the moment is the controller)? Sorry - too many questions (and many apologies if they've all been answered before)! Hope someone can help though!

Hello and welcome to the forum. By all means ask away, someone will always have an answer.

Martino has done some great mods on Stainz locos, have a look at his posts. This one includes a photo or two of what I'm on about;

GRS is a good place for replacement chimneys etc. Bad news is their website is seldom up to date and if you want to order something, do it over the phone - not by email or via the site. Their response to electric orders is sometimes pretty hopeless.

Can't answer your third question I'm afraid - that's in collector's territory.

Welcome to the forum John
Mel has done some lovely British outline conversions using GRS kits.
For my money the smaller wheeled Otto looks better converted but have no traction tyres.
Stainz start sets all seem to go for roughly the same amount on Ebay but somone might give you more info.

Hi John & welcome
this is my take on anglicising a Stainz
Running boards added plus front full width buffer plate (Brass for strength)
cab made higher ( this one is to 1/12th scale)
and battery power in the wagon to the right ( no dirty track problems)
plus detailing bits
the chimney is copper pipe plus a brass plumbing fitting turned in a drill stand & soldered together

Hello and welcome,

As Mel has kindly said, I have chopped a Stainz an i'm pleased with the result. I just put the story up on another board and as I'm at work and don't have access to all my photos, probably the fastest way to show you is to give you the link.

Feel free to PM me if you need any more info.

Thanks to everyone for their replies - really helpful.

Martin - your 'intermediate' stage of rebuilding is what I'm going for, I think but with maybe back of the cab straightened (no 'bulge' outwards). Couple of more questions:
[*]Is the chimney you put on just a replacement straight LGB one? [*]How did you make/ fit the running plates & extended buffer beams? Thanks again to everyone who replied - very much appreciated!

Yes, it is that one (pipe & crane wagons) - thanks! I won't do any cutting until I've found out a bit more!

Hi

The intermediate chimney was an LGB straight stack smoke unit replacement purchased from eBay. Dirt cheap and a direct replacement.

The final stack was a GRS chimney, although I replaced the white metal tube with a bit of brass tube

The footplate is plastic card fabricated.

Hi John

Bring some beer tokens tomorrow and I have a basic Stainz you can have for not too much!

Oh, and welcome on board!

Neil - yes, that Neil.

PS - 12 Hutchinson - shouldn't that avatar (10 - GHW!) be blue....#ducks#

Dont forget to use your search engine to look up "Paul Stainz Holt". He has been a great help to me for Stainz mods & information about Stainz.

Cheers from Andrew

I converted a Stainz to be more 'British' in outline by adding side tanks full length each side (taken from a Bachmann Porter) and opening up the rear cab wall, full width, as on the LGB French locomotive, the carpet hoover. Alas, I am unable to post photographs so no visual aids. I also modified a LGB #2017 series locomotive (German 'Porter') and fitted a Stainz cab to it, giving a British feel.
