More on the Accucraft Forney

Yes, it's looking like a fine runner but why did you say 'and it does not melt sleepers'? I'd love to know what happened when they got melted - I might learn another 'how not to' fact (that's a serious question, I'm not being nasty!).

It's a very tempting loco, but I've ordered Leader so I mustn't order any more at the moment.Nice pic's.Does it have a super heater? It's got the half In's cylinders I know so it'll obviously pull well.

The Caradoc got so hot at the front end some LGB sleepers were partialy melted where the loco stood for any length of time. The paint work on the smoke box also suffered scorching. With the baffle on the inside of the Smoke box door and an improved burner means the Forney is not overheating. Presumably the new Welshpool locos have this improvement.

This sounds like your flame was burning in the smokebox rather than in the firetube. It should 'pop' back after lighting and in this case it obviously has not. The burner needs adjusting and this loco should have gone straight back to the supplier. The burners are the same on all locos except that some are longer than others ? dependent on boiler length.

When you fill the loco with gas, open the smoke box door, turn the gas on,not too much,to allow the liquid gas to be released, when the spitting sound stops(don't light at this stage).Turn the gas off, leave for approx 20 seconds.Carefully open the gas valve while holding a flame in front of the open smoke box,the flame should pop back to the back of the boiler(the fire box)if it says in the smoke box turn the gas down till it pops back to the fire box.Close the smoke box door when the flame settles. As the engine gets hotter the gas pressure will increase causing the burner to roar, turn the gas down.Obviously don't do this in an enclosed space.Hope this helps.

This was not a case of Smoke box fires. I have been running steam for nearly 20 years so I would know. We had a visiting Edrig here recently and the owner was having difficulty in keeping the gas down. I have also heard of other cases of hot front ends. The main thing is this seems to be a thing of the past and we can look forward to more good locos from Accucraft.

I think you must have had a bad example Curlew. I (a complete novice) have never managed to melt a sleeper or burn a smoke box with my Caradoc - even when I left it to simmer for 20 minutes when I had my gas filling problem.

You obviously have the experience with live steam but it sounds like you were unlucky in this instance :(
