Motor Bogie Ideas Please?

Dear All,
I really enjoy tinkering with old Playmobil trains and over the years have created a number of 'neverwazza' type models by swapping bits around, combining parts not previously used together and the odd bit of painting here and there.

One of the models that fascinates me is the RCE, as despite the toy-like nature of it, it runs very well and has lots of potential. I have several that I have converted to track power and added lighting to. There seems to be loads around, on ebay and elsewhere, some are quite decrepit and cheap and ripe for conversion.

I have two projects in mind...... making a decent centre car by cutting and shutting two power cars, which appears to be very straightforward, although I will get a skilled chum to assist me, as I don't want the result looking like a canine meal. Someone else appears to have done one of these already.

More ambitiously, I would like to make a decent single car unit out of two power cars, cutting off the ends so that there is a longer passenger compartment, two vestibules and a cab at each end. Structurally this is straight forward, but the big problem is how to motor it? The existing motor bogie is far too big and fits under the passenger compartment, as articulation between the two cars. There is just not enough room for it under the cab and front end.

I have seen a single car on your tube, clearly done by a very skilled Playmobil butcher, who has made all sorts of excellent things, even a Playmobil Crocodile out of body parts for the 4050 Diesel. His approach to the single unit was to make it short and asymmetrical, squeezing the PM motor bogie under the front cab. (Search for videos by NobodyAE)

Ideally what I need is a smaller powered bogie, that would not take up much more room that the existing PM non-powered bogie. I am sure that it will need to be longer, as the PM bogies are very short, but most of all, the issue to be tackled here is height. I am thinking that possibly using a similar bogie at each end is the idea solution, to help symmetry even of one of then is used un-powered.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a source any potentially suitable motor units?

James

Reccomended for would be RCE Butchers like me!

I agree with you, the RCE is a very nice model and runs well. (I have two of them, plus one centre car.) The only idea that came to my mind was one you have already seen on youtube.

I suggest you investigate USA Trains power bogies as fitted to their diesels. There are several different wheelbases and I believe they are fairly easy to obtain.

This is a USA trains (i think) motor boggie that John (J2s) fitted ( yes John i still run it for the kids) you can see it has twin batteries and goes like ***** and more of a dragster than a practical passenger transportation device.... i can take more pictures if you need these are about 4 years old

Looks more like an Aristo truck.????

I don't know how short you want the truck to be but I wanted the shortest possible so I cobbled one together:- http://www.gscalecentral.net/Reo-Railbus-m251993 < Link To http://www.forum.gscalece...o-Railbus-m251993

Standard Bachmann 31mm wheels fit the 3 - 6v unit (£1.85 at Mindsets) and a bit of scrap aluminium. Based on a Bachmann freight truck from old Big Hauler Tender.

It could be but this one isn't marked and some of the Aristo ones i have are so i bow to your better judgement Hopefully John will read this and put us all right

It appears to be a model of the AAR B type roller bearing truck found on RS or Uboat locos.

Why don't you just use an old Playmobil track powered loco motor block as that should fit the existing bogie frame little modification. Failing that the standard LGB motor block from Shoema diesel of powered tender should fit.

Guys,

Very much appreciate all the replies. Very helpful. Thanks.

I will check out the different types suggested and see what is likely to fit best. I loved the linked posting on the Speedwagon too. I will probably keep on loving it........Ha Ha!

I have attached a couple of comparative images of the non-powered bogie I am seeking to match, or get as close to in size as possible! This can be seen next to an electric PM motor block - Relatively huge! Sadly this willl not fit in the space available for the non-powered bogie

In one image you can see our youngest cat taking an interest, whilst behind can be seen a glimpse of the chaos in the garden, whilst the drainage works and lawn relaying are being concluded.

If you want to replace the small bogies then there are only a few limited options. The smallest mass produced are Aristo-Craft or USAT 44 Tin diesel bogies although perhaps still a bit too big. There is a US company that makes scratch builder parts that makes a "Magic Carpet Drive" which basically is a motor, gearbox amd wheel set that pops into most G scale freight or passenger bogies.

The standard electric Playmobil motor block is shorter than the RC one and will just drop into the RCE motor holder and can be held in place with double sided sticky tape. (I think Walter Turner used the auto type used for fixing DIY rubbing strips.)
