i purchased a tender shell in anticipation of never finding an LG&B yellow one to match my little loco in that livery-which i did to my amazment-2 !!
so , being one not to waste,
i decided to make a shorty tender for one of my US porters
the chassis is a $10.00 hartland flat car with stakes-
it fits perfectly under the shell-the stakes arent even necessary
it also is surprisingly close in axel spacing to a porter tender i have seen -albeit a bit longer in the body
i think however the change in the wheels makes the tender look far less chunky than the stock motor block arrangement
the shell is the familiar 2015/2017 -started as LGB silver grey LG&B livery
i decided to try this project using what i had in stock in the bin , and the paint i had on hand
to match my porter painted several years back
not sure im finished-I may make the cribbing a different color- to match the cab
needs attention to the journals and something printed on the tender i think to add interest
the crib sides are made of styrene plastic strips, etched with a saw to have grain lines, and it can be in the rain
they look too uniform and boring as i see these pics (tamaya red brown)
and can be used with or without the porter obviously-the footplate was some odd bit from a POLA beer wagon
the fire wood is from fallen twigs around the garden-easily cut and split with my garden shears-held in place with wood glue, and some ACC too -lanterns are ozarks-painted the lens' with tamaya -and removed only a tiny area of the mirror backing to let light shine from within
best part was cost
not much more than $25.00 -
i find that everytime i do a repaint and detail project, the costs soar due to specially purchased paint, decals and detail parts -often obscenely for even simple projects-not this one (of course it may look as if it is from the dust bin)
This took me about 2 hours, start to finish, including priming, re-working the orignal spray color i chose-which was completely wrong in feel (nato black from tamaya-which has more green than the cap color would reveal-then a respray with reeefer gray) , cutting twigs and adding stuff
while i love flared top tender walls, very old time US rr look, i really couldnt determine how to attach styrene to the edge, nor to make a
corner that matched flare, and have sturdy attaching points to the stock tender ( a very narrow edge) -so ...i didnt
comments and tomatos welcome
