A few days ago I visited Jeremy in Dragon G Scale. I hadn?t seen him for a while, but I like to go up there now and again to gaze at the wonderful array of LGB, Bachman and Piko items he has. I came across an old LGB Post van 3019n.
This was the old style LGB, so it is missing some of the more modern Decals and the more modern electronics. A price was agreed and it was mine!

Now I should warn you, the van was in a bit of a state, caked in dirt, grime and anything else that managed to attach itself to the wagon in the last 20 or so years.

The picture above was half way through the clean up process. As you can see someone had decided to colour over the rear end in some form of marker, so this was the second task... To clean this up!

On the inside of the wagon, someone had decided to place plastic over the windows for the outside. I'm not sure if the newer ones have this, but as I'm sure you will agree, it makes the inside look a little tatty. So the next job was to get rid of it and clean the inside a little.

The brass strips which run the length of the carriage had oxidised over the years, so after some braso, they came up great!

The last thing left on the list was to put some pickup shoes on the wheels, so that the wagon could have track pickup. 5 minute job!

All that was left was a bit of spit and polish to get to her up to a respectable standard.

I was amazed that the lights still work in her too! I havent got anymore plans for this one. I think ill just run her for a while.

Nice restoration job. They are very pleasing vehicles, aren't they?

Hey, just noticed I'v got one of those, practically unused, it's a bit dusty, but it has never been outside. I must have purchased this about ten years ago and although it came in its box, it would have been bought new a good bit before I got my hands on it. Attractive vehicle, as you say

Thanks for the comments!

I really wish LGB would stamp the manufacturing date on to their goods. It would be nice to know when this was made.

@GlenGrant, does your postie have any plastic covering the windows inside?

No, just the uhm naked if you'll pardon the expression, bars on the windows, and I'm sure I can guarantee that that is how it was manufactured. Any other details required? There, I've just taken it down off its shelf, gave it a wee bit of a dust, and taken a few more pics

Hey you've got this wee fat old man running up and down his wee stepladder, yes there are brass strips along the floor carrying the current. You say "newer" but I'm not sure how "new" is "new". I think a difference also is that there are three small roof vents on mine. These are part of the roof moulding, not inserts like a lot of LGB coaches etc, and which keep disappearing. Oooof, got to get my breath back before I go to the pub.

I have an older version (it used the old type coupling) no glazing and with brass strips, although I recall only one pickup. I remember this as I swapped the coupling from end to end as LGB had put the hook at the tail end of the wagon and not the attach-to-train end, burned my fingers with the soldering iron
Constantly on the lookout for the parcel version in brown, it's a question of want rather than need

i've got the blue one, not the green, also has brass strips and no glazing

welll the n number on the door makes it about 1975-79
yours is a pretty early version of the lighted modern 3019 series

you did a nice job cleaning it up,
i love to do that sort of thing,
very satifying to see something go from grotty to nice condition

Y'see, what an interesting little post this has developed into. What was just a sort of LGB wagon I bought some years ago in a job lot which started me off on G-scale now has a history. Thanks chaps

On the wagon in the first post, there are foot steps under the side door of the compartment - I've never seen one with these before? Do you think they were fitted by a previous owner?

Think they came as standard, all of mine have the step, well did - one has since broken off and i have yet to find a glue that will work on the LGB plastic

James
these steps, under the post door (not the big slider) are definitely added as i have a pic of the original (Kompendium!)
and no post wagon has come with these extra steps

Hey, Good spot and yes they are retrofitted - i assume they are anyway. The person before me has used long screws which do look a little ugly. I will use a hacksaw and take them down when i have 5 minutes. Its not going to make any difference to the wagon, but it will make me happier knowing its done.

Crikey, here's a guy with a row of them. As usual, when you mentioned steps, I went off at half cock and photographed the steps on my one, then I realised that what I was photographing is in fact how the wagon was originally built. The steps you show have got to be later additions. As you say, pity LGB didn't put on a construction date, probably too expensive. However, you will note that on the solebar of mine is a "REV" date, this presumably last overhauil, repair or repaint date. It doesn't show up on the pic but the date is 3/7/87. I bought this one in "as new" condition, I do not think it had ever been taken out of its box, and it has hardly been touched by me, just maybe a few circuits of the indoor track.
