Re:NARROW GAUGE 0-4-0 PORTER SIDE TANK - MIDWEST QUARRY? ANY good??

Hi Steven
I have the saddle tank model which is much the same . Loco is nicely detailed and runs and pulls very well the only problem i have with mine is at low speed the loco can stick on the dead frogs on my points as power is only picked up via the four driving wheels . For the money you can't go wrong .

Re:NARROW GAUGE 0-4-0 PORTER SIDE TANK - MIDWEST QUARRY? ANY good??

Depends how old it is, the very first generation 1/22 version with the plastic siderods was terrible, gear failures. But the second generation 1/22.5 version with metal siderods was the best version so far, the newer 1/20.3 version is OK but due to all the electronic circuitry gobbledy-gook they added it doesnt have the better tracking wheel suspension in the 2nd gennie so its more prone to derailment.

I have a current one I bought on a total whim, great looking, running and detailed model, I have been trying to sell it with limited luck, as they can be had in the US for well under $100.

I had one of the current batch, had problems with running through some LGB points, but soon converted it with a spare LGB 0-6-0 (HF130 diesel) chassis. Added extra weight it will now pull a house down. Alyn

That's very nice but there's not much left of the original!

I spy Stainz cab too!

I have the Ely Thomas saddle version and would agree with all Richie says.

Just don't pay too much for it, they can be had quite cheaply on ebay.

Re:NARROW GAUGE 0-4-0 PORTER SIDE TANK - MIDWEST QUARRY? ANY good??

I have one of the early ones. It isn't too bad but I wouldn't reccomend it. One thing I did notice (and had to cure) was the connecting rods fouled anything at the side of the running rails that was slighly higher than the railhead (like level crossings).

Mick

P.S - extermely nice loco Alyn!

The 1 : 20,3 Bachmann side tank Porter, which appeared in 2007, is much larger than earlie variants.

They constructed a completly new (rigid) chassis, but kept the wheel dimensions of the first ones (33mm)

The wheels are made from cheap zink, similiar to the Piko wheels. They tend to collect dirt very fast.
If used with track power, is is recommended to mount steel tires.

Haulage power ist more than an LGB Stainz. Probably because the weight is distributed evenly to the axles. Weight is 1800 Grams. You can get the loco for around 100 Euro at Ebay quite often.

It is a fine little loco, suitable as a switcher or for an industrial line.

Personally I like the smaller 1 / 24 variation with the metal rods and the pendulum axle better. But unforunately they are no longer made.

Re:NARROW GAUGE 0-4-0 PORTER SIDE TANK - MIDWEST QUARRY? ANY good??

Hi Steve , I have 2, I think they look fine but they are not keen on dirty track, I would think if you can get one for £100 then its a good buy, they are not the most spectacular model ever made but can do a job.
Cheers Garry. PS will search for funnel in the morning !

hi mate..tht why i was thinking hard about this porter!..so hw long have u have them for?.does it ran well?.what about headlite running?
what year those were run it? 19--?

Re:NARROW GAUGE 0-4-0 PORTER SIDE TANK - MIDWEST QUARRY? ANY good??

I cannot say for sure , they look early 20 century vintage, I've had mine about 3 years , I only run it lightly as am concerned about reliability issues re Bachmann stuff generally ( Based on my experience ) The headlight is variable, but I must say I have never run either of them in the dark , my newer version with the saddle tank has a bright headlight however. I would guess they would fit in with 1910 onwards until the end of steam as they were not a mainline type, they could well have survived in private ownership for years , need more information from someone who knows about US practice & this prototype now I think.
Cheers Garry

Hi Steven
Got my Porter from Garden Railway Centres about 7yrs ago . The head light looks very nice in the dark not a white light but a nice orange glow . Don't know much about the Porters history might be worth you putting it in Google .

Re:NARROW GAUGE 0-4-0 PORTER SIDE TANK - MIDWEST QUARRY? ANY good??

If you got your Porter 7 years ago, it is not a Spectrum 1 : 20,3, but something in a smaller scale.
They were equipped with a small lightbulb. The Spectrum Porter, which was introduced in 2007, has a very bright LED. Much too bright and cold for a vintage loco.

Re:NARROW GAUGE 0-4-0 PORTER SIDE TANK - MIDWEST QUARRY? ANY good??

The latest Bachmann side tank Porter is a later Porter design so yes, a 1900s (proably WWI era or so by the accessories) loco and not an earlier one.

The detail on them is quite better than the previous one. I had both the side and saddle tanker, the saddle tanker came out in 2004 or so. I think I paid $75 for those on closeout from Ste. Aubins. I sold the saddle tanker to Kevin Strong and he modified it (like everything he owns) into a proper EBT loco, you can see the excellent results on MyLargeScale.

I have sold off all my Fn3 stuff excluding one gondola kit and the side tanker. Why? I paid too much for it ($150) and I actually kind of like it.

As Otter has pointed out, the later ones use LEDs. The saddle tanker used a yellowish one, cannot remember on the side tanker, has not been run in years.
