Neoprene Washers

John Morgan

Steam Traction
Hi Group,
I was sorting my washer stock out the other day. I noticed that some of the rubber, [neoprene?] washers were red, some white but most of them black. Does anyone know if there is there a colour code for different uses ?
I am sure the old white ones I have were from a Roundhouse cylinder refurb kit used on the pistons.
Over to the group.

John.

Colour denotes material from which you get suitability to application.

From my experience many moons ago at Pearse Locomotives we used white silicone for static use, ie gland seals, and red silicone for dynamic, ie moving use, ie piston head 'O' rings. However viton 'O' rings seem to do eaqualy well in both situations.
I used to rely on the experience of one Brian Matherson at Whitby and Chandler in Sheffield when I needed 'in depth ' knowledge. If you need to know just call me at Accucraft and I will try to help. However I may need to defer to Brian as he seems to be the expert.
