New Accucraft UK W & L Cattle Van

Sea Lion

Registered
Finally, at last, I am pleased to be able to now advise Accucraft UK are adding the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway cattle van to the already comprehensive range of W & L rolling stock they produce. The van will be modelled on the original design before rebuilding by the G.W.R. and as such will be available in W & L light grey, light grey (data only) and dark grey (data only). The release date will be sometime in 2012 and the RRP has not yet been announced.

What do you think?

Happy steamings,

John

I think any addition to the W & L rolling stock range is a welcome one John. Both the W & L and L & B goods wagon ranges represent excellent value for money IMO.

Fantastic news!! I've even built a cattle market for it.

Will the roof be easy to remove so that it can be loaded?

The one really obvious thing still missing now is the non balcony brake van. The current version doesn't go with either the coaches or the locos as modelled.

Yeh  yeh  yeh!

I agree with Mel, removable roof please. Excellent news.

Accucraft have confirmed the roof will be removable, in the same way as the IOM 4 wheel coaches.

They also advise thye will not be breeding any scale cattle or sheep, so if anyone fancies a cottage industry?

Happy steamings,

John

Great news. Thank you John.
I am pleased but a little anoyed because I spent weeks converting a WLLR covered wagon in to a cattle wagon. I still have the other one to do but I will wait now.
I wasn't really looking forward to cutting all those hole anyway!
Cheers!

What a new model that misses out the essential details? How can it get to Market with such fundamental errors?
I really think they ought to make sure they include the cows and make sure to get their markings correct, also the dung should have that iconic smell

Cattle are no problem as I'm sure Schleich ones will be perfect. However, there is a need for someone to make some suitable sheep (the Schleich ones might be OK in 16mm, but are too big for G). Considering that you can get almost every other animal (even birds!!) in creation and how many Welsh based layouts there are, I can't believe how difficult (impossible) it is to find some decent sized model sheep. Definitely an opportunity for some enterprising supplier IMO.

Aren't the Accy W&L stock to 16mm then?
Yes, but at the risk of sounding like a sheep rivet counter - Schleich sheep are still a bit on the large side for most Welsh examples.

Dear wooly strand counter,
I guess things are bigger in Europe.8D

Typical! Just bought two IP Engineering cattle wagon kits and I'll bet these will come out at about the same price. (Mutter mutter mutter):wits::wits::wits:

Yes a much welcome addition.

Would be good to have a few more models of three foot gauge originals, though. How about a Southwold six wheel cleminson coal wagon? Now there's a challenge!

Then I guess you should try 1:24th scale sheep instead.:laugh:

Yes removable roof is probably the only economical solution to populating a mass produced cattle wagon
But if you scratch build one you could make the roof part of the integtal structure, & have opening doors on one side for access, &, & as a plus, as part of a realistic photo scene of loading/unloading, especially if youv'e gone to the trouble of building a loading dock
cattle wagon is somewhere down the list of things, I would like to make & might get round to doing!!

Yes, very good news John but I agree with Ric & Keith, I think a little late, they may have missed the boat?
After asking Accucraft about this and getting a very negative response at Stoneleigh I also bought two from E Bay. They are both GRS & have LGB wheels and also seem to run much better over my LGB R3 points than other BMS items which was also a bit of an eye opener. (But it could just be the longer wheel base)

That said. I would still like to get my hands on the Green & White W & L coaching stock as discussed a few months back & pictured in Garden Rail. (Evan if I do have to change the wheels)

Any news on them coming out.

I always thought the W&L used those open trucks for sheep traffic, but seeing they only had a door on one side (or so I believe) does this mean all the loading ramps were on the same side of the track, or did the wagons need running round the wye in Welshpool yard before being sent off down the line? Must check my copy of Boyd to see if he has the answer.

Well Mel it looks like somebody was listening to you. Your, Post 12.

I have just been to the sheep shop!
Well to be honest I now find it difficult to walk past any Toy Shop nowadays, nothing to do with railways! I blame the grandchildren.
That?s my story and I?m sticking to it.

Anyway I found a new Schleich Shropshire sheep model No 13681. Which has the top of the head at about the level of the existing sheep shoulder.
Its in the 2012 dogalog as a new item.
It s almost white with a black face & sox?s and is a very nice looking model .

That's because the LGB flanges are deeper and run on the plastic through the frog while the shallow BMS ones drop in a little. The longer wheelbase vans and guards van also drop in a bit ;)

Thanks for the tip off on the sheep :)

I've used Schleich cattle for my scratchbuilt cattle wagons.

However, being solid plastic I found they are a bit weighty for my poor little 0-4-0 locos. I ended up disemboweling then from the underside with a drill bit. Not very humane (particularly as I miscalculated and ended-up drilling through the palm of one hand which was holding the cow at the time) - but once mounted in the wagon the hollowing-out is not noticeable.
