Finally moved to new house with small back garden.

Wanting to use the whole of the area for the railway.

So do we deck it or artificial grass the area?

I think decking, Lisa wants artificial grass, i dont see how we can do anything if using artificial grass, electrics would be difficult, how could you do a village scene all on grass!!! decking we could put grass on where required.

So you want us to intervene in a domestic dispute! :-)
Decking for good running, artificial turf for aesthetics if you are sharing the garden for multiple usage. A good old British compromise required I suspect. :-)

It think it will transpire in the coming posts, that it would have been less contentious to ask 'should we stay in or out of the EU'. Good luck with this one. My suggestion would be to look long and hard at Mike's Lazy Bay Grange III.

I said grass (Lisa is always right!) but probably a combination is the answer.

Just for the record and accuracy I said artificial grass and then add decking on top for the track to run on. I was going to post on here to ask those with small gardens to share their pictures ideally from a bedroom window as an overview. Bullar Trees was like a small country compared to Hemley so we are starting over and looking for good ideas AKA pinching others :)

My plan for the next railway is for an elevated deck (getting old and ground level track just plain sucks) with the areas that require it will be artificial grass.
Incorporated into the railway will be troughs made from PVC guttering or drainage channel containing bonsai (my other hobby) type trees.

By decking am I correct in thinking the area completely covered with timber?

How about a compromise deck the lot and put artificial grass over it, there you go problem solved win/win for all involved.
Electrical wiring/bus if using DCC installed before on joists before decking boards go on, with power feeds in place to be connected later of if ever needed.

If you are using battery R/C then who cares (other than SWMBO) just deck it and place grass where the scenery dictates.

That is one option I have been looking at online, just dread to think how much that will come in at :sweating:

Deck the whole lot and then use an attractive resin/mini-aggregate (like driveways etc) for village area and track bed and grass for other areas. The resin/ aggregate comes in many colours and would good as ballast ...... and it won't wash away, be redistributed by birds or move about. Lasts for years and will put up for a lot of abuse.
Clean, effective and attractive, job done!

Paul, Lisa, DON'T use cheap decking boards, its just not worth it.

I'm not sticking my neb in here as whatever I suggest round here "Trousers" say I'm wrong. :hi::hi:

OUCH! She's was watching. :giggle::giggle:

Lisa! Long time without hearing from you, I thought you only dealt with the travel agents now according to Paul's postings! Love the 'Angry Vader' avatar. :hi:
Anyway, from personal experience with a ground level track and real bushes and ground covering plants then I would seriously say use both, deck (if elevated you can also run track underneath as Mel did) and astroturf for the surroundings of the railway. I'm not sure if you can lay track on the artificial grass, as mentioned above Mike's is a great example, but you can put down decking under the track and surround it with fake stadium pitch. :nerd:
Of course both will be expensive, not because of the topping but the work (drainage, electrics and so on) underneath.

You youngsters needn't worry about your knees yet. You will be ok until you are in your 60's at least.

Artificial grass can look niceIMG_1814.JPG

This is an indoor layout but I think the grass looks nice. When the track is painted and ballasted it will look like this:

I have also used artificial grass outdoors for some years now.

What do you class as a small garden ? Why not a a railway in a "proper" garden rather than just the all or nothing fake grass/decking options ? Once these questions are answered then might be able to get an ides of what direction to go. Max.

Don't know what brand the artificial grass will be..
But isn't the variety always 'couch potato'?

No No No! You don't want couch grass - it'll choke all other grasses!:)

I have artificial grass on some areas. Here are some thoughts: good quality is very expensive. Very.

It hold debris, buds, leaf bits etc.
it can tempt pets.
It looks nice, all year. I have not had weed issues, but I use it in a no grow area close to acidic evergreens, in shade.
