Having got in after slaving over a Cold Garden, I wanted a little bit of Warm Workshop Work that was a change from the Rollwagens. So I broke out some Newquida Coaches that have been sitting in their Boxes since I moved just over a Year ago. Back in March 2012 I bought 2 Red and Creme HSB ones from that nice Mr 2 Jags. They were £39 a pop, and even at the current £48 I consider them to be great value.

Now these two needed to be brought up to speed in the reliability stakes. I do the following Mods to ALL my Rolling Stock:-

- Metal Wheels, LGB if I have them, but Bachmann are very acceptable. I have loads of Rolling Stock that runs just fine on these Wheels.
- LGB Couplings with a Hook at Both Ends.

No stock of mine is allowed to run without the above being carried out. A further Mod that is in the process of being carried out is to add Nylon Washers to cut down side to side flop. Any Coach or Wagon that derails through no fault of the Operator is looked at seriously and gets these if needed.

Now to the nuts and bolts of my Conversions, this only took around an Hour to do this evening. So no big deal time wise.

First Job was to take off the Roof on the 3 Coaches selected for the Bash.
1 of each Type shown here.

A quick look through the Rush Bits Box as I now call it found some of these. What they are is Toilet Compartments from Bachmann USA Coaches that Andy had bashed into the Swiss Style Caches that can be seen in his thread.

image.jpg

These were glued in with a piece of the Black Plasticard to make a Privy. White Plasticard was glued to the Window. There is a space in the seating for all this to go as it were. This gives you this:-

image.jpg

Next the End Rails are taken off the Slope Coaches and one of the Red and Creme ones. This Pic shows the screws to undo. They are the two to the Outside.

image.jpg

Fit the removed arts on the opposite coach. These are the parts that will be swopped over.

image.jpg

Finally put the Roofs on the opposite coach and there you are job done. 3 uniquely different Coaches for my Harz Line.

In view of the recent reappearance of these and some of the apparent controversy it has caused, I thought that a bit of positive messing about with these would be appreciated by the Forum. I have lots more that I wish to do with these:-

Painting of the inside, the Red is very Garish.
Figures
Weathering

This will all be attended to in good time. Meanwhile I have a Railway to Build!

Further to this bash, I have been trawling through my East German Pictures and found these two, which exactly replicated what I was trying to achieve. Well minus the Bog anyway, though that may be on the other side. Plus these are only 6 Windows and the Newquid are 7. Oh OK right then I will break out the Razor Saw! These are on the 3ft (900mm) Gauge Line at Bad Doberan.

Anyone noticed how quiet the Forum is just now?

This little bash has been bugging me for some time, my Epoch is East Germany before the Wall came down. Someone I am sure will tell me the Epoch Number. But the Newquid Red and Creme have HSB, not my thing I need DR. So I decided to attack one of the Coaches to see if I could Remove the HSB Lettering without any Damage to the Colour.

First I went at it with a Fibre Brush, do not Touch it with your Fingers, the Fibres are Small and very irritating. This Pic shows the effect:-

image.jpg

Having done this, the next job is to Clean off the Crud with a Damp Cloth, here is the aftermath of that process. Note that you can still see where the Removal Work had been undertaken:-

image.jpg

The final flurry is to use some very fine Wet and Dry, mine was diamond 400 Grit, the finest that I had in stock. I think that you can see the effect is pretty well to return the Paint to be a good match to either side. Take this very carefully with Well Wetted Wet and Dry:-

image.jpg

Then I of course messed it all up by attempting to do the lettering freehand. But worry not, it is acrylic and easily removable.  When I get round to ordering some transfers for Germany, the effect will be as good as (well nearly) LGB.

There was a time when I could letter with a Paintbrush pretty well perfect, I have some O Gauge Private Owner Wagons that I did circa 1979-80 to prove the point. But well now.......

"There was a time when I could letter with a Paintbrush pretty well perfect". I know the feeling Jon. Oh well ?????

Well you have demonstrated two points Jon - how to remove printed lettering without damaging the paintwork (excellent), and the other? Well, I'll join you with that ;D What I could do and what I can do now - the gap gets wider. But nothing spoilt as you say. When you get some tranfers made up they will look really good.

Yup i certainly gave a great demonstration on how NOT to do lettering. I just need to hunt the German guy out, probably bookmarked on a PC, certainly not on the iPad.

Found him:-

Also does new Numbers for the Trainline Malletts.

Razor saw is a bit technical for me - I used my trusty 12 inch hacksaw! Still, you can't really see the join. It is a little fiddly to trim all the glazing and internals so that they still line up but is works well and is a good, cheap coach. I added a few passengers and some lighting with a 9v battery box beneath and changed to metal wheels, and the shorter coach is better suited for my branch line. One day, I might even get round to finishing the lettering on mine!

Not just here but over on this side of the pond as well, I figured its just the end of summer so folks are trying to enjoy the good weather while it lasts.

Nice job, I figured these would get alot of kitbashed and that's proven to be the case

Yea Vic, the last few days have been absolutely fantastic around here, SE Pennsylvania. Actually did some work on the railway.

Nice Job via, I am going to modify most of my Harz Stock Soon, some of the 6 Window LGB ones will get a Bog. Should be in the Middle for a 6 Window Harz and the Window a tadge smaller.

Sorry but as far as I can see for Harz your Bog is in the wrong place? But I believe you are doing Sardinian? Or Italian? So this 'Sorry' comment is totally out of order. But the Newquid are a great starting point whatever your line, Country or Interest.

Mine is freelance Spanish metre gauge, where almost anything can be considered and yet be fairly authentic, as they bought in kit cheaply from wherever they could get it, both US and European, as well as making some weird and wonderful things locally! For a modeller on a tiny budget, this is a great excuse to bash all sorts of stuff ;D

Must agree with that. Will possibly be looking at a Bash to one of mine, the Harz Coaches came in all sorts of configurations, so something will get bashed at some stage.

I have been doing some more stuff to my Coaches, in particular the one that I renumbered. I ordered some of the Coach Numbering Transfers from Herr Troeger. I must say his service is brilliant. I Completed the details of my Order last Monday and the Transfers arrived Thursday. Whilst these are a bit on the expensive side, they are correct and that makes all the difference in my view.

So I removed all my grotty lettering and applied the Transfers. Following the well thought out instructions I had no problems. But when cutting them out use a Brand New Blade.

Also seen on the coaches are the End of Train Indicator Plates. More about these on a separate thread on my mods to LGB Harz Coaches. I also fitted Nylon Washers to the Axles as suggested by John Lythgoe in one of his articles. I get them "M3" from Squires. In my 2011 Catalogue they were around £3.10 for a hundred. Enough for around 25 2 Axle vehicles depending on how many each vehicle needs. Some axles need just 2 others perversely 3!

Pics of the Modified Vehicle together with an end view showing the Marker Plates.

I still need to add a figure or two and do some subtle Weathering. Also totally obvious on the Picture is the lack of Door Handles. But hey, doing mods is what makes the difference between something that is ..... and something that is yours. As ViaEstrecha has so ably demonstrated.
