I bought a second hand loco that needed a little tlc and a lot of oil and vaseline.

Now that switch, it is a 3 way.
When i put dc voltage on the wheels with the switch on the left the loco did nothing.
In the middle position the chimy started a bid smoking?
when i put the switch in the right position the loc engine reacted at 9.8v dc.
And the chimney went smoking again.
This was all seconds work.

I take the "rainbow" cable off before proceeding.

After the generous amount of oil and vaseline the engine reacted at 7.2v dc and is a very smooth runner.
Yes i toke it all apart to get excess to the gears and bearings.

This is in the chimney.

So the loco needs new working head and taillights they are broke?, this is going to be redone anyway because my system is just dc battery operated, so a extra (3.3v) line for the new leds must be made from his new battery.

My questions are mainly about this board:
(Later on the engine will get his power directly from the deltang receiver and skipping the board)
- Is the switch for dc in the good position?
- What is the use of this board
- how do i get the chimney to work? put demineralized water in?
- How much v i must put in the heating element to let it work properly.

And what else you can tell me.

Thanks in advance, best igor

What loco is it; make, model etc?
For the LEDs I run mine off the motor voltage using the appropriate resistors (back wired in reverse of the front). When motor starts to move lights come on.

Piko, I believe?

Don't use water. Smoke oil, you can use garden lamp oil, no more than 5ml maximum.

Vaseline, very bad, it is a petroleum distillate, and will cause issues to plastic.

ooooooo a lot of ducks... o_O o_O o_O :banghead::banghead::banghead:
I thought it was safe to use, i could not find a ball baring grease (to inpatient.)
Now what i must do??
The trucks are made of aluminium.
The loc had some miles run.
Some of the gears are made of plastic..

Maybe more stupid? I cleaned the contacts with nail poilish remover (non aceton type)

How do i proceed?

Ok spend a bit of cash on LGB lubricants (Massoth also do both).
- 51020 gear lubricant this is for inside on the gears, now you have put the wrong stuff in clean up as much as you can and put a little on each gear, it will spread to the rest of the gear when running.
- 50019 special oil this is for smoke but also good for bearings so again clean off all that vaseline, you may be able to use some of this on a cloth to help remove that pesky vaseline so get a big bottle not the silly syringe though one of those is very good for small application so perhaps get one of both.

I know spending money goes against the grain with a lot of modellers (not suggesting you) but the right product saves money in the long run.

Oh finally, please ask before you jump! I for one would never jump down someones throat for asking what may appear to be a simple question.

Igor,
Don't Panic!

The plastics LGB and Piko use, will be safe with a little Vase line.

IPA (Isopropal Alcohol) is better for cleaning contacts.

With grease, a little is better than a lot. - If it gets into the motor, it will not do it any good.

Vaseline being a hydrocarbon will slowly leach out the oils in the plastic, and gently turn it brittle, all types of plastic, including LGB and Piko.

Marklin a Pruisian model:

year? old.

We have for in the shed a "zibro" heating stove. it uses smokeless oil, but this is with a "sock" and on high temps.

Put it in the small pipe? or around the small pipe in the chimney?

This will be pain steaking...with the crocodile was also bad to get the timing right again.
I wont jump in anymore, promise.
Is petroleum jelly not solvable/diluting with a thinner petroleum distillate, like washing benzeen(slightly thicker than turpentine? white spirit i believe?)
Or a gun degreaser?
So take the whole locomotive apart except the gearbox and wash it off? blow air dry(compressor) and put the right oil and grease back?

Thank you for all your answers and thanks in advance for the upcomming answers

With best regards Igor

Take chassis apart and clean as I suggested with grease I suggested applied with a small screwdriver, small amounts required.

I will do as suggested, thank for your advice
