Opaque window material

I have been titivating a used coach I recently bought off this forum....missing wheel pickups...missing passengers ( obvious glue marks on the seats )...and sorting out the coach lighting.
One thing mising was the toilet window opaque glazing....the outer glazing is present, a passenger going about his 'business' would be clearly visible

Casting around for suitable material, whilst making tea it came to me..the plastic used in milk cartons. I used a 2 litre M&S carton ( other cartons are available ), suitably cut to size, and held in place with adhesive tape.

See the before and after pictures.

I'm flushed with success!

I should have added, that the plastic material is translucent..sufficient that the lighting will be visible outside the coach.

I needed similar for my station booking hall toilets. I found a couple of ways of 'frosting' the std acetate sheet but the most effective was sand blasting with a Humbrol sand blast gun. I've had it in stock for about 25years I knew it would come in useful one day.:laugh:

If I remember from my teenage model building days, if you rub with Brasso and rag it turns the clear plastic obscured.

I've mocked up a night shot.....
In reality, the translucentness of a high quality M&S milk carton is insufficient, I'll have to find a thinner or less opaque material.....
The picture shows just how well the toilet compartment is obscured ( dark room...no flash )

Some UK mainline stock (ex-LNER?) used to have a clear oval in the middle of the obscured window so that whilst "occupied" you could see that you had just missed your station. :crying:
It probably accounted for the skid marks in the corridors......

That reminds me of a question about Concord. Why did it have frosted glass in the toilet windows? Who the hell was going to look in at 50,000 feet?

Some of us are a bit taller than Mike.

God.

Same with the train really, who the hell can run that fast? :rolf:

Little green men?

Actually, I'm pretty sure there was no window in Concorde loos, indeed there aren't windows in any aircraft toilets.....

After I logged off from GSC, and turned the pc off...I realised I had taken a picture of the wrong coach....with LGB fitted opaque toilet windows!!!!!

So here's the right picture...with the M&S milk carton opaque sheet taped inside the clear window glazing. It's a bit less opaque than the LGB supplied one, but perfectly fine.

I won't be making a small oval peep hole for punters to check where they've stopped. I do remember the view holes..even on BR Mk1's and 2's?
