Ordering spares from LGB

For some reason German companies (Marklin, Trainline 45) can’t now send product to the Uk due to Brexit and documentation issues.

I’m trying to obtain spares for my LGB locos. Any suggestions on how to actually obtain them without going to Germany or moving country!

Good question. I assume there's still a UK distributor and authorised LGB resellers in the UK. Try calling for example Garden Rail Supplies or P&S Hobbies and see if they can still order them from LGB. You'll be paying top dollar and it might take some weeks. Haven't tried this recently but if they can't get spares then we're sunk.

Just a thought, do we have anyone in Southern Ireland that could act as a broker? Would need double postage costs etc but ought to be doable.

Not can't but can't be bothered. Try Chalk Garden Rail. Peter Skinner is the service man for UK & surely he can get bits.

I’ve spoken to Matt at GRSUK and they can’t supply. It’s a point of principal for these German companies, they don’t want to go through the new rules. I contacted Trainline and they want deal with the Uk as it’s the paperwork yet if you go to Grootspor in Holland they can send the Trainline stuff no problem.

I do think Dunny is correct people need a contact basically anywhere but here. I see LGB have Afghanistan on their list of countries available for postage!

Depending on what you want, have you tried Ebay?

Consumable items do crop up on it, unless you are looking for a specific part.

Yes well worth looking at ebay to see if there are any broken spares or repairs items. Though sometimes these can make more money than a good one! eBay buyers can be an odd lot at times.

That’s exactly right here’s the reply from the Marklin service department:
Dear Mr. Lane,

Unfortunately, shipping to Great Britain is currently not possible. Here we are still being thwarted by the British bureaucracy. We have been waiting here for weeks for certain documents to be able to export to the UK. As a result of the Brexit, the British authorities seem to be very overloaded. We can only wait until these documents are made available. We ask for your understanding.

Sincerely yours,

Your Maerklin Customer Service

Hi Dunny,

ive got a couple of HSB 2-10-2s fitted with Kadee couplings which meant that the hacking around causes the loss of the snow ploughs and other details. I want to refit with LGB so require new pony wheels

Oh so not much chance of a cheepo spares or repair on them then!

Hi Dunny,

That would not help because Ireland is in the EU, like Germany, and the same rules apply for exporting to a third country (lots of paperwork). Have members tried outlets such as Modell-Land.de or Champex Linden?

Reads not so much "can't be bothered" as "would like to and will do when we get the forms from the UK". How often do we read of a company in the UK launching a new product or special offer when they haven't got in place the staff and systems needed to meet the demand for it?

It's certainly not all German companies.

I've had a full drum kit delivered ok, all correctly sold ex-German VAT from the source, with UK VAT collected by UPS after delivery.
Some German model shops seem to be coping ok, whilst some aren't keen on removing German VAT and the risk is you end up paying UK VAT on top.
I bought some N gauge spares from German ebay recently, under the £135 threshold so it just went through as it always used to.

In another related thread it appears modell-land are also not shipping to UK at the moment. Don't know about Champex Linden, worth a try.

While LGB/Marklin haven't exported to Great Britain since Brexit, and are using "missing paperwork" as their reason, Modell-land have been doing so during 2021, collecting UK vat, with customs paperwork on their packages, until last month. I wonder what their excuse for this change of policy will be! I have no experience with Champex Linden other than seeing that their standard postage rate to Great Britain is exhorbitant (€ 25 or thereabouts). Okay for a big purchase, perhaps, but not for a few spares. Modell-land was the same, other than for small orders under € 20 (LGB Spares etc) which was very much more reasonable (€ 2.79 + € 6.79 pro-rata per kilogram).

In the same way, the problem with LGB spares from Germany on eBay is the postage charge!

Cheers

David

LOL!

UK buyers may have to do what the others outside the UK have been doing for a long time.... use a reshipper that will provide you with an address within the EU,

I use MyGermany (German Shipping Address & Package Forwarding Services) and that works well for shipping to Australia as long as I keep the declared vale of shipments below AUD $1000 in value (about GBP 532), which is the Australian Customs "now we are interested" entry point.

UK customs seems to have set a much lower "now we are interested" point, so you'll need to decide for yourselves whether a reshipper will work for shipments to the UK.

I have successfully had LGB parts from Marlin. Champex-Linden, Modell-land and eBay reshipped to me.
