Piko 218 or Taurus

Hi all

I am just starting out in G scale, and wanted to start with a starter loco. Not being much of a steam buff, having grown up with diesel and electrics, plus 3 years in germany, I wanted to look at the Piko 218 or Taurus. So my question is, which one do people recommend.

Technically, both locomotives are almost identical. So, your decision should only be made on which one is the prettiest in your eyes.

I'd go for the BR218

which one come to your mind 1st? then buy that one..

i bought my 218 from a forum member ,its fitted with sound and i have no problem with it at all. running at slow speed it realy sounds good and it copes with rad 1 bends no problem. a big sturdy diesel. allan.

Thanks for all the replies, it seems that the 218 is ahead. Remenber seeing them in Germany, so that will be my first purchase.

Just found a 218 at MDR Direct for £154 and bought it, every else is £250. Worth a look, they have the yellow 218 for £176, and a number of different Taurus liveries from £140. Also Aristocraft 66 for £299.

Good choice. Pictures are compulsory you understand, a lot of us are very hard of thinking and must have photos :)

A good choice! It's only a personal aesthetic thing, but I'm afraid I really dislike the look of the Taurus. The 218, on the other hand, just looks "right" to me!

Both my 218's have never given me any trouble, but they do need clean track

These Piko locos really are mazing valve for money, I have a 218 with a sound system fitted where the only issue is that it is now top heavy and needs some weight adding to the chassis to stop in falling over if R1 and R2 curves are taken too fast. They are not as detailed as some other brands, more similar to LGB from the 1980s but in some ways that is better as it makes them more robust in the garden, the plastic is good quality and knock resistant.

Im looking forward to putting it through its paces. I must admit I was happy to find it for £154, as it puts it in the same bracket as the Taurus.
