PIKO Mogul Gearbox

Hello
My PIKO Mogul has had gearbox issues for a while and I replaced the motor and the spur gears this weekend. It lasted about 15 minutes before stripping again. I pulled the engine apart and found that one of the spur gears worn out again.Looking at the gearbox it would appear that the mounting axles for the spur gears are too short causing one end to come out of the housing and the gear to float and strip. Any one else had this? Also the worm drive does not cover the whole of the crown of the spur gear at either end and this does not seem great engineering?
Bill

Hi Bill

I have heard of the same problem occuring with PIKO locos unfortunately I have no idea how the problems were (if?) resolved.

All I can say is it takes me back to my first LGB loco in around '78 a Zillertal 0-6-2 ( so early it did not even have skates in those days!)
Anyway my first line had (too) steep gradients and after around 18 months use which was quite often as i only had 2 or 3 locos
The gears on the loco stripped! No one supplied spares in those days in fact very few outlets for LGB existed, so I wrote to Lehmann in Germany and a week later I received a big bag of assorted gears & axles no charge to myself. There were probaly enough items to fix a dozen locos!
I fixed the 0-6-2 it continued to run for many years, and since then i have never had any gear problems with LGB locos
