Looking at your photos, it looks like a slot is cut in the wheel tyre is that right ? If it is I guess it must make it easier to make tolerance wise, as 3 of the wheels seem to have a bigger gap than the other 1. And also be easier to press onto the red wheel centre ?

Yes there are splits in the wheels, but I have never investigated it, or taken the wheels off. I converted mine to 2.4 gHz RC as the original equipment has a limit range, and subject to interference:
