OK, if you havn`t already guessed i know owt ` bout electrickery this will confirm it. Fitted my new sound card and checked all connections etc. but still not getting sound, could it be that my basic LGB controller just ain`t good enough, if so bearing in mind all i want is dc, and to run one loco at the time what should i be looking to buy ?

Which sound card? Does the loco still move ok, just no sound?

I very much doubt that the addition of a sound card is going to instantaneously overload your basic controller, they don't draw that much current.

I doubt that is the problem - if the loco plus sound card was trying to draw more current than the controller can output, then the overload cutout should trip and nothing would work at all. If the loco is running but is still without sound, then the problem is going to be somewhere in the sound card or its wiring.

Having said that, if you want a more powerful controller anyway (which you'd need if you get any 2-motor locos, or one that is more power-hungry than LGB types), you could look for a bigger LGB one second-hand (2 amp or 5 amp), or go for something like a Helmsman unit, British-made with lifetime warranty and highly recommended by a number of folks on here who run analogue.

Loco still runs, just no sound, the card is a Mylocosound card, i have tested the card as per instruction leaflet, i disconnected the card and tested the wires i added to the motor input wires and there is a current when i power up so i assumed that there was not enough power to operate the sound card. I have 2 cards, both new and i get the same result with both.

I do have some 2-motor locos, i like the thought of a Helmsman with remote control - would a 5LGBRC be suitable ?

Hi

I recently setup a mylocosounds card with DC track power. A voltage driven version.

At one end it needs to be connected to the track, so it can tell the voltage.

At the other end it needs to be connected to a power supply to actually power it. I connected this end to a rechargeable battery.

Hope this helps.

Rob

I recommended Helmsman on the basis of many good reports both on here and from friends that use them (I haven't had one myself, because I've been DCC since I started G scale this time round) - from what you said you require, I'd think that the 5LGBRC would be ideal for your needs. In particular they seem to be excellent on after-sales service and support.

Do not think the controller is the problem, is this the Bachmann Lyn as on the earlier thread? As you have no sound I would suggest you try another speaker, the one fitted may not be compatible. If you have already done this then I suggest you contact My Locosound.

I have two Helmsman 5 amp controllers-not the LGB version, but I have no trouble running two-motor LGB locos and I certainly would praise the after sales service

Looking at their website, the difference between their LGB versions and the "ordinary" 5 amp ones is the voltage - the LGB units output 20 volts rather than 12 volts.

I now run with a Helmsman controller and I find it is beyond reproach. :D

A quick 'Google' brings up a 'co dot uk' which appears to be for Helmsman..
But the next couple of links direct you to Glendale Junction, or Dragon G Scale..
Would not surprise me if some of the other suppliers carry them as well.

I can vouch for the service from Glendale, but have not used Dragon.. They seem to get good reports on here though.
*Other suppliers are available, advice worth what you have paid for it!*
;) :D ;D ;D

Lets not get carried away here.

I wouldn't buy a new controller just to get the sounds cards to work. Not until I knew it would fix the problem, which I doubt it will.

If you need a new controller for other reasons, then go ahead. I hear Helmsman are very good.

Just want to say thanks to everybody for the replies, tips, advice etc., i have now got 2 of my locos, "Lyn" and the Climax with the MyLocoSound cards installed and up and running and i`m pleased with the end result, musn`t forget Peter Spoerer who supplied the parts and also answered all my queries. Whilst i would have liked all my locos to sound like the 4-4-0 with the Phoenix card the budget doesn`t stretch that far, and anyway the MyLosoSound cards are pretty good considering for under £100 each i have sound and rechargeable battery packs.
