Problems double heading...

Ok my two weighted 0-4-0 with shared power set up (AKA budget grunt) is not working so well. It pulled lovely on the straight but this time is sent it round for a few laps of the loop.

The lead loco very easily derails on getting to either of the r1s I have. They are very short wheelbase so they shouldn't. They run same speed, very smoothly individually.

Just can't see whats happening. does it track power connected or not and nose to nose, back to back and nose to back.. Grrr

Any ideas?
 
If they both run fine under load but not coupled to each other and only derail when coupled together I'd investigate the coupling between the locos. Could it be restricting the swing of the leading loco or putting a downwards load on the rear of the leading loco's causing that locos leading wheel flanges to lift clear of the rails?
