Progress on finishing things!

For far too long now, I've been in a continuous state of starting things and not finishing them - to the point where I must have nearly a dozen locos and other pieces in bits around my office, workshop and any other available flat surface, where I've dismantled something to start, say, a decoder install - then something else goes "oooh, shiny...." and diverts my attention.

Well, in a sudden burst of enthusiasm I've actually spent the last couple of days getting some things FINISHED! So far I have:

1) Reinstalled a reprogrammed XLS decoder in my orange/cream 2095, so it has the proper sound files rather than the generic diesel it had before;

2) Finished off putting an S into the factory-MTS red and cream 2091 that I swapped with Mike well over a year ago (it came to me with an XLS used solely as a sound chip, which seemed a bit of a waste so that has been removed for re-use in something else!), and put the loco back together;

3) Finished installing an LS into my green Dingler Ts3 - a pig of a job because there's no room inside it due to the brass construction and all the lead weights (which is why it's so damn heavy!), which is why I'd been putting it off for months - but a lot of fiddling, swearing and cursing finally saw it back together and it all works! Unlike my DR black version, this time I didn't even burn out the lights....! :thumbup:

4) This one isn't quite finished yet - I'm working on installing an LS with a Powercap Micro buffer in a Fiery Elias steam tram - about three-quarters done now and going OK so far, I'm taking lots of pics of this one and will do a write-up once it's finished and working. Worst job was getting the LGB driver off his little pedestal at the side of the boiler, he REALLY didn't want to let go! ;)

Next one after Elias is finished will probably be my orange Tm2/2 tractor, reassembling it with a S module and then finally fitting the lovely whitemetal Hiab crane that I got to go on the front platform. Then I just have not one but THREE "U" class (one black, one grey, one green) to finish chipping (they are all in various stages of disassembly), a little green Feldbahn steamer to finish putting an M and an S into.... oh, and the Piko railbus I got the other week, but I haven't got the chips for that yet!

Maybe then I can get back to the "not-quite-a-Lyd2" conversion using the 0-6-0 chassis and 2/3 of a V51 bodyshell! :bigsmile:

Lessons that I should have learned from by now, but probably never will:
a) It's a lot easier (and quicker) to take something apart than to put it back together....
b) Don't take anything new apart till you've put the last one back together!

Still, there is a real feeling of progress over the last few days, so that has to be good! :)

I still have a DB101 loco in bits that I purchased when at the last G Rail in Nottingham - I am attempting to motorise the pantographs!

I'm intrigued by this. I've given some passing thought to the idea myself, but wasn't convinced I could hide everything. Can you get the S and a speaker into the body somewhere (coal bunker, presumably)?

Actually, I've just realised I'm assuming you're talking about the LGB feldbahn steam loco, which might not be the case.

Hi Tony,

The M decoder goes into the little space in front of the gearbox as per LGB's own instructions (the Massoth M is identical to the LGB small decoder, just cheaper!), and the S, with its locating tabs carefully snapped off (they are grooved to make this easy to do) will JUST squeeze into the little coal bunker in the cab. The speaker, a Visaton 36mm round flat type, will be white-tacked to the underside of the cab roof, pointing down, so that it is invisible from normal viewing angles.
Will take and post some pics when I get it done!

Yes, yes, Jerry - I wondered if you or the Creaky Beaver would mention that first! ;)

Actually it was looking for the little bag of Aristo track screws that made me realise just how many started but unfinished projects I had round the place, and thus got me going on them again..... :thumbup:

I got no room for talking. My current large project (see other thread in C/Lounge) first bashed brain cells just over 20 years ago, even if I didn't actually cut metal for some years after and built another loco in between.

Thanks for reminding me Jon, I ordered the bits to synchronise the chuff sound and make a power buffer for my Fieldbahn engine a while ago but didn't get any further than that with it!

i try, to finish one project ,before starting onthe next ,as i find it spurs me on to finsh it, but i do try and plan projects in advansce, i dont feel guilty pondering how to do the next few projects while working on the present, or ordering in the bits to do a futre prodject, so the stuff is on the way ,and arives as needed ..it dosnt always happen, but thats half the fun..

One job that is almost finished is my Duo rebuild.
Its been on the bench for almost 2 years but progress keeps stalling. Thanks to forum members it's heading for "signing off"
The first bit was easy. Convert to 4 wire gear box & change the wheel with the tyre.
I intended to install a Massoth XLS that didn't get used on an earlier project. It had been reprogrammed by the retailer who originally supplied it. Now it wouldn't speak to me. Thankfully MUNS sorted it.
I needed the circuit to operate the couplers directly from the decoder. (In my first Duo I fitted relays). After getting no response from the Massoth forum MUNS came to the rescue again.
After much butchering I managed to get the old style orange body to fit but the cab lights were much smaller. My parcel has now arrived from mmts containing Modell Land bits & my lights now have lenses.

You should see my shop!! I've got cars there I've had for 10years....... And the train sheds not much better the K4 Stainz has been apart for a few years now all it needed was a new motor which it got but its just in need of reassembly! The bridge is oh so close to being finished just 7 cross braces and some track to go........ Now I'm getting depressed thanks a lot guys......

But surely, if you finish something, then it means you've got to find something else to start, otherwise, where's the fun :cool::cool::cool::cool:

Oh, I don't think I'll ever run out of projects, but it would be nice to get the number of uncompleted ones down into single figures! ;)
