Quarry Hunslet or Black 5?

Hi folks
Yes - another video, though it is from Chris Tilley's wonderful Barle Valley line again. With your eyes open you will see an Accucraft Quarry Hunslet running at half speed. But with your eyes closed what does it sound like? A black 5 perhaps?!

All suggestions are most welcome...

A super film of a super railway:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: the sounds are perhaps a bit harsh for a quarry Hunslet, I seem to recall a lighter more musical tone & rhythm to them, I was at Llanberis last week:love:

That really is rather nice isn't it. They run really well and of course 'size matters' in our scale just as elsewhere. I always prefer larger locomotives cos they tend to run better.

Thanks for the kind words guys - I was very fortunate to have the railway and builder to myself for a morning to make the three films.
You are right, of course, Gary. Quarry Hunslets do not bark quite like that - but I have to admit that the sound does make me smile - especially when you can hear it coming at the beginning of some of the clips :D
Tag - your magic touch would be perfect for customising a 7/8ths loco - are you not tempted......???
Cheers
Chris

I would have thought it reminiscent of a G1/2A with their uneven valve settings.

Re the sound, it really reminds me of the J94s at Whitehaven collieries in the late 60s and early 70's. (Coal washing plant I think it was, north of the town.)
They used to sit at the bottom of the incline until they had full pressure, with the safety's lifting, plus a good fire, and a full boiler, then charge the incline with the coal empties.
Valve gear was never quite set right, plus they were fitted with Giesel ejectors, and the racket was unbelievable!
I had a cassette recording of it once, long since lost in house moves, where the racket overpowered the auto recording level as the loco passed, full forward gear, full regulator.
I believed they had tried, and rejected diesel locos, because they could not get the power needed in the size that was applicable, mortgaging the boiler on the J94s would give extraordinary power for the half mile or so that it was needed.
