Regner Max with condensing chimney

A short vid to show my latest attempt at getting rid of the jet of steam coming from the cylinder exhaust. It's working rather well and even though you can't hear the difference on the vid, it DOES have a bit of a 'chuffing' noise!

Perhaps me and Chris Bird should get together and market a new 'Chuffer'?

Looks much better now :) been considering a Max myself. A bit of a silly question maybe but how does the condensing chimney work?

Love it.....

You've got to get one Ricky, they are soooo simple and easy to use. The loco, the trucks, the oil, the water and the odd spanner to tighten anything that goes loose, plus fuel all fit into a box not much bigger than a shoebox! So it's one trip to the railway and away you go

There's no secret to a condensing chimney, it's just a brass tube that has a jet of steam squirting into it. As the steam hits the cooler brass, it condenses... and dribbles all over the floor of the loco. :(

The vid doesn't do the sound any justice, it sounds a lot better in real life rather than via my very cheap camcorder... honest

Re:Regner Max with condensing chimney

That has worked out very well, what fuel does it use for the fire?

Cheers :) I'm using Mamod fuel tablets because I can't get any Sterno chafing dish fuel (which is what you should use), and they've worked fine up to now. I think they give a hotter flame.

Re:Regner Max with condensing chimney

If you are interested in having fun and not too bothered about rivet counting, get a Regner I say.Brilliant Tom....

Re:Regner Max with condensing chimney

Thanks Tom, i've never been able to find sterno fuel either. It definatley has plenty of steam on a winters day.

You get order it from amazon but more shops sell it than you think and is getting easier than large cans of butane to find. Camping good shops have it also most Asian food wholesalers as it is used in the table and bufet hot dishes.

That looks great Tom and thanks for the suggestion :)
In fact I did a special chuffer in a resonator for a Regner Willi a year or so back, but we don't list it as there was little demand. Nigel can make one to order though, or I am happy to do a special for the Max if you would like. In fact it is a simple matter of mounting a chuffer in some K&S tube with a condensate outlet in the bottom.
You can see it on the Willi here:

Re:Regner Max with condensing chimney

hi Tom/All
Why does regner make the steam come out of the wrong place on all the coffie pots?

Cos' the burners at the bottom of the pot so it would interfere with it, thus it has to exhaust elsewhere.
I have seen some where the exhaust is run alongside the chimney and that looks qiute effective

Oh dear, I thought that was just a sign of old age:rolf:

Re:Regner Max with condensing chimney

On one of my steam boats which has a verticle boiler and a ceramic burner I routed the engine exhaust just behind the funnel and it does look good under steam. It keeps the firebox dry, a condensate tank is a must, to keep the oil off the top of the Loco or boat.
The first time I ran my boat without the condensate tank I thought it had been attacked by seagulls, because it was covered in large light brown blotches. These turned out to be only oil/condensate. It looked awful.

Cheers tom, really been considering one when I can scrape some money together. Have you gone for any of the upgrades? I thought it might be worth fitting the four wheel drive kit and then adding some weight.

That sounds simple enough :) I thought you might have to have a condensing tank holding water or something complicated. I can imagine lots of opportunity to make the Max unique as well.

No upgrades for me Ricky  At the moment I'm well pleased with it as it is so any bolt-on goodies I fancy can be done at a later date. I haven't found the need for 4 wheel drive - it's got quite a bit of pulling power as it is.

There is one thing I would like to point out with this kit:

Because the instructions are in German, you miss a vital step that says you should: USE LOCTITE WHEN YOU FIT THE WHEEL BEARINGS. If you don't, one will come loose and fall off on the track... like what happened to me... and I can't find it amongst the gravel :(

Deepending what material the bearing is, a friend had great success
at the week end when a grub screw came out in the balast.
Ran an old speaker magnet on a bit of string over the area, found
4 LGB screws he had lost months before as well.
Might be worth a try

Excellent suggestion Rob! Unfortunately, I've just tested one of the remaining ones with a magnet... and there was no attraction at all.... :(
Good tip to remember for the future though.
