Good Evening to All.

Would anybody have the Assembly instructions/Construction Manual in English for the original Regner Shay Kit ?

Many Thanks

Bob

Tried Regner direct ? They are still very much in operation despite Manfred's passing. Their website lists some English language manuals in PDF form, perhaps they have the one you want too if you ask. Is your kit the one listed by Andrew/GRC. Looks very nice, thought about it myself. Notice it's shown "out of stock" now.

I can only encourage you to write directly; I saw Mrs Regner and daughter last Friday at the Freienbach exhibition in Switzerland, and they are very much still in business and innovating. Replies to emails can be a bit slow, though ;) If you don´t get anything, let me know.

If you want to write in German, try this text:

Liebe Frau Regner,

hätten Sie noch ein pdf der Bauanleitung für den Shay Bausatz. Leider finde ich sie nicht auf dem Website.

Vielen Dank im voraus und freundliche Grüsse

Hi folks, thanks for your suggestions, yes it is the shay kit that was on Andrew's site, a lucky find I'd say.
I have tried the contact form on Regners site but of course my request is in English so it may well be worth contacting Frau Regner directly.
Thanks for your Responses
Bob

I would be interested to hear how you get on as I've just bought a used one off ebay and I could do with English instruction too.

I've also noted a couple of structural flaws in the design; there are no truss tension rods or bogie cross braces as on the real locos which means the weight of boiler and engine are causing the chassis to sag in the middle and the bogies to go out of square. I need to work out a way to stiffen the chassis and see if there is clearance to add the cross braces to the top of bogie frames. The think the braces may of been omitted to enable the wheels to be re-gauged to 32mm.

I´ve just realised that a Swiss guy I know has a Shay kit sitting waiting to be made. I bet he has the instructions. I´ll try to get hold of him, but since he retired he´s been very busy .... :-\

Hi to everyone, I've now received the shay kit. It all looks very nice and is all in its original packaging, and hadn't been unwrapped.
Instructions booklet is included but it's in German. I suppose the only options are to see if there is a downloadable PDF. version that can be copied into a translator or to try to scan every page into the P.C. and see if that can be converted or fed into an online or software translator.
I have emailed Regner requesting English instructions but I don't know what sort of timescale would be usual for them.
Can't really think of any other options other than writing as suggested at the moment.
I'll let you know how I get on in due course.

Cheers

Bob

Martin of Martin's models may be able to help.
IMHO it's worth phoning him, unless you've already asked him.

Hi Folks, Regner have told me that they have posted a link for the Baluster Shay on their website. http://www.regner-dampftechnik.de/service/instruction_translation.php.
There you must look for the Baluster Shay. It's in English but perhaps not quite the way we would write it over here. It's all text and no pictures so it needs to be used in conjunction with the hard copy of the German Construction Manual to supplement the diagrams you can see on the original pages.
Apparently there was never an English version of the Manual so this is a translation using Google.

Still it's better than nothing.

Cheers.

Give me a buzz if there´s anything which is totally unclear, and I´ll try to make sense of the German.

Hi all, I'm finally getting somewhere more useful with the Shay kit instructions.

I've managed to download the original instructions pdf. file from regner-dampftechnik.de (Shay baluster) which is in German.

I was then able to convert the pdf. file to an HTML file using a free online service.

The converted HTML file, when double clicked on the P.C., then opens a web browser page, in my case Internet Explorer, which is a complete copy of the original manual with pictures and text in German.

If you have Google toolbar installed it should then indicate that the text is in German and ask if you want to translate ?. Then you hit the translate button and most of the text and diagram legends etc. are all converted to English with all the illustrations present all pretty much as though it was the original English version, although that was never produced in reality.

If anyone wants the converted HTML file for translation please P.M. me with their email details, as I can't see anyway to attach this file to submitted posts or other forms of contact within the forum.

Another website is Schienendampf.com , although in German it can be again translated using Google toolbar and there is a useful Shay building post here.

Look at the Board index /Kits/Construction reports/ Baluster-Shay of sprinklers after you have translated all of the pages you navigate, again using Google.

It really is so simple and quick once you know how and this chap has made Truss rods to strengthen the frame similar to what you would find on older U.S. outline rolling stock.

Happy Kit Building.

Don´t know why I ever bothered to learn the language (except for speech) ;)

The instructions for the shay kit I built for a friend here in the states were in German, thankfull I can read enough German to muddle thru it. When I got stuck I called my uncle on the phone as he speaks and reads German. Glad I built it when I did as he passed a couple months after I completed the kit. The lumberjack's instructions were in English, not sure why the shay didnt get the same treatment as most would probably get sold stateside or in English speaking countries. Mike

Get in touch if there´s something German that seems particularly obscure. But then again it might just be .... :o ??? :-\
