Not yet given up, but thought I'd seek advice before getting started to avoid making a hash of it.

I've ordered from Germany some replacement worm wheels for one of my ToyTrain Otto motor blocks.

Whilst awaiting their arrival, I thought I'd prepare the wheelsets. Any advice on removing one of the wheels without damaging it? Not concerned about damaging the old worm wheel as it's knackered.

I place the wheel flat on the partially opened Jaws of the vice. Then use 'whatever' comes to hand (4mm machine-screw, etc.) and a small hammer to tap the axle out.

A scratch across the wheel-hub, and axle-end, can aid in lining things up when you replace the wheel.

I'd wondered if a tap with a blunt instrument might suffice but it seems so secure I wasn't sure if it had been Loctited on.

Thanks for the tip about scratching to restore the quartering. A lot better than doing it by eye which was what I had considered

The beauty of these, is the back-to-back is pretty much 'right' if the end of the axle is flush with the outer-face of the wheels..

So once you have 'Mk.1-eyeballed' the quartering, you can press the wheel back on, in the vice.
