Respraying Bachmann Big Hauler

I don't suppose anyone knows a where to get the green paint or spray paint that is used on the first Big Haulers? I'd like to repaint the boiler on mine as I'm not a fan of the blue boiler. Although I am considering respraying it all in a different colour.

Re: Bachmann Big Hauler Green paint

Well, it'll be whatever the Chinese used at the factory all those years ago. I suggest take the loco along with you to a model shop or somewhere like Halfords and see if there's a close match?

Re: Bachmann Big Hauler Green paint

Matching paints can be a nightmare considering that most painted colours are made up of varying amounts of different pigments not just one. Nothing can look worse than a "near match" alongside a similar colour. Then you may also end up with non matching finishes which while "creative" can look equally horrible. You also have to be careful over the lighting conditions when you view to make the "match". OK to try for small touch-ins, otherwise IMHO you should go for a contrasting colour if you must change it, say good old satin black to offset the green.

You will also probably destroy any residual value, if that is important to you. Not great with a Big Mauler I know. I think it looks right as it is.

It may be possible for a trade car paint specialist to test a sample of the colour with a special devise to get an exact match and do you a 500 ml rattle can but you may find the cost prohibitive. I've done that before.

As a little point of note - Roundhouse use standard automotive or BS colours on all their locos so are easy to match or change to other factory colours. Did that (+ a Lightlines job) with a VoR and increased its resale value (and saleability ) by about £500. Max.

Re: Bachmann Big Hauler Green paint

My personal opinion is that if you are going to paint anyway, it is worth stripping down and doing a total repaint in whatever colour you fancy. My painting skills are non-existent, so I opted for dirty black all over!

Re: Bachmann Big Hauler Green paint

Looks darn good in black too.Nice job.

Re: Bachmann Big Hauler Green paint

Well the 'blue; that you do not like on the prototype is not blue. It is a metal called Russian Iron which, rather like the sea, reflects the blue sky.
Maybe you could dull it a little or 'silver' it slighly. ;D

If that is anything like the Lada Niva I used to own then it would equate to rust ::)

Re: Bachmann Big Hauler Green paint

I know it would be very difficult to find something the same.. I have been considering just re spraying it in black, I'm not really sure what I want to do with it at the moment. It would mean I'd have to get new transfers for the tender and cab as well (If that's what you use for G scale) I'm fairly new to G scale and I just think it looks to much like a toy at the moment.

Re: Bachmann Big Hauler Green paint

Well I think I might just spray it black and turn it in to a Rio Grande Southern loco its just finding the right transfers.

Various suppliers are available in the US who do transfer sets to suit G Scale (c 1:24 in the case of the big hauler) in dry print, waterslide and vinyl forms. However these come at a cost. You could find sets of Woodland Scenics` dry print lettering in "Railroad Roman" over here in sizes that will suit. DJB may still have some stock of their dry print D&RGW/RGS sets that they used to make. Most will be in white. Some will do you bespoke transfers (cost again). Max.

Re: Bachmann Big Hauler Green paint

I've been looking for a Rio Grande Southern transfer and I'm not having much luck finding any, anyone know where you can get them from?

Try here http://www.davidbaileydesign.co.uk/trans.html. Good UK based supplier. The ones on my Connie came from here. You will probably need 1:24 scale for the Big Hauler. Numbering and lettering sets available here too. Max.

I have a Bachmann RGS ten wheeler.  I left the cab number as it it but carefully painted over the RGS logo.

You should be able to remove the body for spraying or hand painting, masking the smokebox area - assuming that is to be left silver coloured.  The coal load should be removable  and the cab roof can be left oxide or sprayed black - whatever your preference.  I suggest the green motion and underbelly parts would be more easily brush painted.
A model shop should be able to supply white lining for wherever you felt it was needed on the body.  As for the tender name I made a inkjet printer name (my own railroad name).  It was affixed with white glue.  It has not `fallen off` so far, but can be easily be re-applied or re-printed.  If you use Word, or similar, you can make a variety of names.  Mine has a black background with gold lettering.  The cab number can be done in the same way.
I thought I had a pic, but I don`t.  However, the coal hopper in the pic has had the same treatment.  You could keep it this way permanently or wait until decals are got.  Often, I have found, your first thoughts are sometimes changed or bettered, so only a small expense is incurred by inkjet printing.

My personal preference for repainting Bachmann models is to use flat acrylic paints then coated with a matt, or not very shiny, clear coat. The green boxcar was done with this method.

I might just respray and paint the whole lot because the silver has faded on mine and there is the brass on top on the chimney, that website that maxi-model's pointed out has the RGS logo which I might buy but it does say "RGS Loco" Which has got me a bit confused because they only had them on the tender.

This was an old circus hauler, was red, white, blue and gold, now plain workaday black n silver with Woodland Scenics dry rub lettering :) ;)(appologies as its an old pic posted it before)

Isn't that Tweetsie colours (East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad) ?? ::) ::)

Anyone know any good spray paints for the smokebox? Revell 90 seems to be the best choice at the moment :)

Rev 90 is enamel and needs thinning.
Why not get a Halfords spray can of silver? costs more, but you will always have a fair bit left for future use..
A lot of railers use the Halfords range as its quite comprehensive.

Just normal silver? I've never tried Halfords range I guess I might as well try it :)
