Hi Folks,

Look what arrived today on Pine Tree Junction! She's our very latest live steamer from those very clever folks at Roundhouse Engineering in Doncaster. She's a superb Darjeeling 'D' Class Garratt and runs beautifully on our garden railway. Another masterpiece from the Roundhouse team!

That is an excellent engine. Beautiful..

Having seen it here I am now more convinced that the advertising photos on the website don't really do it justice.

I shall have to start saving . . . HARD.

I spoke cobblers. Again.

Obviously an object of desire. I am thinking of selling my Roundhouse Russell, my Soul and my Body to get one of these. Doubt if I will get much for the last two. But as they say at Tesco, every little bit helps.

Well. maybe a little for the soul but as for the body!!!

Lovely loco. Alan Regan was running his on the 16mm layout at the Ally Pally model engineering show last week. He let me have a go driving it. Very smooth and controllable.

Never been a big fan of Garratt type loco's but that does have a certain charm and elegance about it. Lovely in fact ! :inlove:

A few years ago I built a K1 Garratt using Roundhouse components. It was always short of steam and I concluded that I had made the boiler too small. I would like to compare my boiler size with that of the new Roundhouse Garratt. Please can someone who has one tell me the following:

The outside diameter of the boiler
The length of the boiler from the rear of the smokebox to the backhead.
The pressure at which the safety valve blows.

Thanks

Hi Peter,

We are very pleased indeed with our new Roundhouse Engineering Darjeeling Class D Garratt which has performed faultlessly since she arrived two weeks ago.

She has behaved perfectly every time we have run her and we would recommended her highly to anyone who is thinking of making a purchase.

We understand that over 100 locos have been ordered since she was launched in April 2015. She fits in really well with our other Roundhouse locos and is very similar to run with her 2.4.GHz radio control for speed and direction.

She has a water top-up system which allows for almost continuous running. We have found it best to run her for between 10 to 15 minutes and then top her up with water and gas. She only seems to need a top up of steam oil after about 20 to 30 minutes.

She runs very smoothly and negotiates our up and down railway with great aplomb.

Amazingly, she's almost silent when the two gas burners are turned down but still produces enough steam to pull a very heavy load.

She has a copper boiler with a volume of 286 ml working to a maximum pressure of 2.6 bar or 40psi. The safety value is set to release at 2.6 bar or 40 psi as well.

The copper and brass gas tank has a test pressure of 33.3 bar or 500 psi with total volume of 45 ml. The maximum working temperature is 60 degrees C with a maximum working pressure of 16.7 bar or 250psi.

Her boiler is approximately 19 cms long and has a diameter of 5cms. It was somewhat difficult to get an exact measurement as there are lots of pipes under there!

Hope this helps.

Best wishes from the Pine Tree Junction Engine Shed!

I thought it was 2.5 inch diameter, but I don't have one here to measure so I cannot be sure. There is also layer of insulation about 2mm thick between the boiler itself and the cladding.

Hi, The boiler cover or cladding is indeed 6.5 cms or 2.5 inches in diameter but the copper boiler is of course smaller. I can't see the insulation but it's probably about 2mm as you say.

.... of course! Silly me! Thanks for pointing it out! Just changed to 2mm!

Thanks for the information gentlemen. The boiler dimensions are about the same as my K1 Garratt but I have no insulation and only one burner so I suspect that makes the difference.
