Driving oil or coal fired locos didn't really differ.
Firing, unsurprisingly, did. The fire would respond much quicker to any adjustments and the fuel was of much more consistent quality. Steam raising could be quicker, but in deference to the age of the boilers it was done slowly. Disposal was easy as there wasn't any ash or clinker in the firebox or smokebox. Tube cleaning was performed on the move when the engine was working hard in a fairly remote location. It simply involved pouring a small quantity of sand into the firebox via the inspection cover!
