Rustic gate

One of my facebook friends recently posted some photos of the rustic lineside fencing and gates that his daughter had made for him out of real Oak. As the 5 bar gate leading into the field to the side of St. Marks church was falling to bits, I asked if she'd make a replacement and here it is.

Fabulous and complete with working hinges and latch too.

She's thinking about going into production. If anyone's interested in getting something made, PM me and I'll put you in touch. Just be aware that there's a lot of work involved in making such things, so they don't exactly come cheap. Well worth it IMO though.

A lovely little model and so well made!
Have you treated the oak Mel?

I'm still thinking about that mate. It should be OK, but it does look a bit shiney and new at the mo (cos it is I s'pose). I'm contemplating whether to dip into dark oak preservative or leave it to weather naturally.

I use Cuprinol 5* as it is a spirit based product and clear. It lets the wood weather to matt silver grey but stops any rot and gives it a bit of waterproofing as well

i love it!
just so beautiful and rustic and obviously a labor of love
the detail on the uprights, each hole being hand fitted and reamed is so cool
and oak is tough, so that is a good deal of work

i too agree about preserving it with the right coating material
i might, stain it with diluted ndia ink (try some scrap oak first)
and then coat
blacken or rust those nails too

otoh, a lovely golden overcoat would really do it justice
there ARE new fences!

brilliant bit of manufacturing that is Mel, she can be proud of herself..
I agree woth beavercreek - use a sprit based preservative (always, water based is carp) and let is dlowly get that grey effect. Wickes do a clear. sprit based, preservative which seems very good and is half the cost of cuprinol - 'Wickes shed and fence preserver'.

Absolutley stunning and so trully prototypical!!!

very nice mell., certinlay looks the part..nice job:thumbup:

A lovely piece of modelling.
Are you going to get a model of that Clee Hill lass you promised to tell me about to sit on the five bar gate? :rolf:
